I feel the same as you actually. These words are not exclusive to the homosexual community, these words gained these interpretations after previous interpretations were established before. Because people previously established a new way or meaning of the word, that has trickled down to today's society. When something bad or undesirable happens, people say "oh that's gay". It annoys me, since its now used as a slur as well. For example, here in Finland it's quite common for people to call each other "****ing homosexual!" as an insult to a man.
