Itachi isn't cliché at all. Well, not to the extent that Obito/Nagato are. Also a lot of it has to do with execution. Itachi's story was unique. I guess you have a different interpretation of what "well-written" means, which isn't a bad thing by any means. I'm just saying that, in literature, characters like Obito are a dime a dozen. Nagato is better I guess

A silent cool guy who turns out to be a double agent is not cliche?

Evil Itachi literally had the same lines and personality as Jin Kazama from Tekken. Even the voice was similar, if not the same.

That isn't the point. There are no new characters. Every character in a given story is based on some motif laid out in the past. There are no unique plots. Every work of fiction tells the same story with the same characters. The only thing the authors can do is change the details. Itachi's role isn't what makes him a well-written character; it's his background, his personal story. Obito's story is just not as evocative as Itachi's. I will admit, however, that I have been underrating Nagato's story; he's actually pretty good.

His background was the worst part about him. He tortured his brother just to "save him" and make him strong. His brother became a criminal and everyone calls Itachi honorable and a genius.

I wasn't talking about Obito. I was talking about Tobi when his identity was anonymous. He came under the guise of a mentor and subtly manipulated everyone. He felt terrifying and evil, and not just cliche evil.

I think you're just talking about good characters. There's a difference between a good character and a well-written one. I'm too inarticulate and tired to go into more detail than that. Also everyone knew he was Obito the whole time; they aren't different people.

That's not the point. Obito and Tobi had different personalities, they're almost like two different characters. When Obito had the mask on, it was an act, he was pretending to be someone else. His identity could have been anyone.

The only reason people thought he was Obito was cause of the hair and the sharingan on his right side, not his character.

What's the difference between a good character and well-written? They're the same thing. A character's background isn't the only thing that defines a good character.

NARUTO because of his growth from nothing to the top ninja from the leaf. Step by step you can see how he stuck to ninja way and how it made him stronger.
