I was just thinking of something when posting about Smoker. Vergo told him in the last arc not to fight by exposing his body so much or else it makes a big target for Haki. My question is, Smoker being a marine and Vice-Admiral before going to the New World shouldn't he have been aware of Haki? If so why would he knowingly put himself out in the open like that? Do you think it could be because he was stationed in the East Blue until meeting Luffy so he figured no one would know Haki there? Or do you think, calm down when you read this, maybe Oda doesn't plan as far ahead as we tend to give him credit for? I know it's near blasphemy to question him on an OP post(at least around here) but is there a chance he came up with a way to fight Logia after inventing them?

Probably

And nothing bad about that imo.
In Oda's case something like that really makes sense not like Kishi who just pulls everything out his ass

EDIT: And the first "Haki" we actually saw was Enel's Mantra. So I think not many people were capable of using it back in the day.

Who knows maybe. That said, haki was shown several times before timeskip perhaps smoker thought there was no haki users in the grandline. After all the strong people reside in the New World! Even Shiki, was disgusted that Gol D Roger was gonna be executed in east blue the weakest sea amongst all.

I read somewhere, Oda came up with the idea of the supernova and drew them on the spur of the moment within hours before Shabondy Arphilago arc was meant to be commenced! Talk about an amazing managaka!

Imagine having no Law, Kid, Bonney, Drake, Hawkins, Apoo, Killer, Capone, Urouge.

He used haki in his fight with Vergo? And he was spacing himself out to cloud Vergos vision, his aim in that fight wasn't to win, it was to retrieve Laws heart and get it to him. Smoker giving Vergo lots of space to hit was vital, this was already stated...
-_- I can't rep. you but listen to what he said^.

this....
and we seen shanks use CoC haki literally in the beginning of one piece, i doubt the oda would create logias without knowing how they could be defeated or touched.

Smoker could always use Haki, he just never had the need to demonstrate it before. There's nothing that disproves he always knew about it.
And his priority in that fight wasn't to win, it was to return the favor for law. That's why he was fighting so clumsy like that and putting his whole body out there.

Law and Smoker both said after the fight that Smoker deliberately lost to lower Vergo's guard to take Laws heart back
