Only because it required a great deal of chakra that the 4th definitely had. But sage mode is not enough to kill Pain much less Madara. 4th was definitely a sage.Minato didn't have a sage mode.
Fukasaku clearly stated that the only one who learned Sage mode before Naruto is Jiraya
actually mr. curtain man is right. it was ONLY said that minato made a contract, which means he can summon toads from myouboku mountain.
i don't exactly agree with the chidori/kakashi statement, but nobody EVER said minato has sage mode. but if he really did have sage mode, then we wouldn't even know half of what minato was capable of.
EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!! madara might have sharingan, but he could NEVER do the same type of damage pain did to konoha if he never had kyuubi. in other words, madara is "somewhat" of a coward. he doesn't even trust his own sharingan for immense power.

Yes, but Madara had the ability supposedly to summon the kyuubi. Whether its by a summoning technique which isn't probably the case, or if he can just bring it to his location somehow else, its his ability just like the large scale Shinra Tensei that Nagato uses. So it wouldn't matter. If he has Amaterasu which I'm not sure that he has because it seems that MS users differ in abilities (Itachi gave his powers to Sasuke, otherwise who knows if Sasuke would have the same powers?) then he'd just have to stand on Hokage rock and burn everything in his line of vision. He also can phase through attacks, so who can really stand up to him at the moment?
but there is something that u are forgetting. Is that amaretsu takes to much chakra to use and i bet that to control the 9 tails he neend's a lot chakra too. and madara does not have more chakra than pein

Let me settle this once and for all
Minato Namikaze WAS ABLE TO USE Sage Mode but never did, as his speed and power alone was that of Madara Uchiha's, but it was because of the Uchiha's chakra amount and with the sharingan, and the mangyeko, Madara power's was beyond that of Minato's, ergo, Minato was struggling to fight agaisnt the Nine Tailed Beast Or The 'Kyuubi', But thankfully, Lord Jiraiya (One of the three Sennin) taught Minato the Double 4-Symbol sealing jutsu letting Minato seal the Kyuubi inside of Naruto Uzumaki (while he was a young baby), and becuase of Minato using all his chakra forcing him to die in the process, if you don't understand it's like, Sasuke Uchiha trying to use Two chidori when he fought Gaara his limit was two but he tried to forcibly use a third one therefore the curse mark was unleashed however if he didn't have the curse mark, he would of died xD There you have it..

To be clear He didn't have to use Sage Mode as his opponent's were pretty easy compared to his strength....
one small thing worng here is that jiraiya diden taught the double 4 symbol seal it was minato's own seal jutsu also sayed by the 3th hokage the is was the 4th's own jutsu when he was trying to seal oro...... soul awayOk I am see-ing this turn into a debate about

well anyone can say he had the SAGE MODE AND OTHERS CAN SAY HE DIDNT...........
BUT UNTIL WE GET PROOF BY THE FROGS THAT HE DID HAVE SAGE MODE...
M STICKING WITH HE HAD NO SAEG MODE.
OR ELSE LIKE MANY PEOPLE SAID MA OR PA WOULD HAVE MENTIONED MINATO DURING NARUTO TRAINING.
SO NO SAGE MODE FOR MINATO AT ALL.

The 4th and Jiraiya images were from Tsunades pov and what she sees as the resemblance between his father and godfather. Pa was talking directly about those who have attempted the Senjutsu arts before so it's really just a coincidence. I agree with everyone whose about Minato not having it. Pa would have made the slightest mention about it since Minato's training would have had to been just as recent considering how old he is.
I voted for Madara. Minato seemed to indicate that even with his FTG, he couldn't get around or surprise Madara and his phasing technique. Actually I wouldn't really give it to Madara and just say neither because he has the power to kill most characters yet he doesn't and keeps referring himself as weaken.

If the manga does not CATORGORICALLY state that Minato was a sage then he was not! END OF! And i agree that pa toad would have mentioned minato whilst naruto was training! I also find it hilarious that ppl think that just becoz jiraiya had sage mode that minato would! If that is tru then tell me this why does'nt Kakashi have the flying thunder god technique!

because pa said so.. Only he and jiraya could sucsessfully and jiraya was suppostly the one that had the record before naruto broke it (narutobase.net/manga/Naruto/418/5)
Anyway to answer the post why pa saw the yellow flash and jiraya and said he even surpased the older generation was simply because yellow flash could summon the frogs and was therfor know in the realm of the frogs. Whats the chanse of gama never speaking about the fourth while beeing back the at the frog realm?
Anyway if you read slowly trought the mangas where naruto does the sage training, you hear pa talking about jiraya. Would think he would mension mister badass superfly if he aswell underwent the training?
