Tatsumi is a country boy who travelled to the Capital with his friends in other to become popular and earn money so they could save their village. However, upon arriving to the Capital, he should soon learn that the Capital isn't a dreamy place like he thought it would be. Fortunately for him, there's an assassination group out there and they might be the good guys, and be recruiting. Now Tatsumi is stuck in a bloody battle between the Capital's forces and the revolutionary army. One sides wishes to change the country, the other wishes to protect the country. The possibility of both group's walking away alive is zero.

Critical Review

The first thing I would like to note is that usually people don't like the fact that sometimes main characters seem like they are unbeatable, myself included. That no matter how much the enemy pushes them back, they'll always find a way to win in the end. Mostly with the so called ''nakama speeches'' or will make the villain have a change of heart. However, Akame ga Kill is definitely not one of those mangas. The possibility of both the ''good'' and ''bad'' side having casualties is equal so it's not the bad side that always gets beaten no matter what.

Akame ga Kill isn't a manga you should enter lightheartedly. I mean, imagine all of the corrupted things in this world, take them and put them on paper in manga format. Now, you have Akame ga Kill. The corruption in this manga goes from a corrupted goverment with power hungry people, mass murderers, mad scientists to pedophiles and rapists. While the corrupted goverment idea has been used in several other manga before, Akame ga Kill goes beyond that and shows the corruption of humanity to it's full extent. Power hungry people, insanity, mass murder, torture, rape, pedophilia, rape, bestiality, etc. You name it. Though, this manga is quite gory so it's not for everyone.

Moving on to the actual story; Like stated above, take all of the human corruption in this world and then give them 48 mystical weapons named ''Teigu'' and then you have what Akame ga Kill is. As stated in the summary, Tatsumi is a boy who travels to the Capital of the Empire with his two friends. However, he gets separated with them in the middle of their travel so he ends up arriving to the Capital by himself, hoping he will find his friends there. In the mean time, he tries to apply to the Empire's military, but the process proves to be too long for him so a beautiful woman comes by, telling she will help him with her connections if he pays her. Tatsumi, being a naive country boy, gives her the money and waits for her to return in a bar. Soon finding out that the woman has no intentions of returning, Tatsumi wanders into the streets of the Capital and decides to sleep there, knowing that he doesn't have anywhere else to sleep.

However, he is found by a kind and wealthy girl who offers him a place to stay. Tatsumi, of course, accepts the offer. In her mansion, the girl's father lets Tatsumi stay with them and even offers to help him with getting into the military, but. An assassination group called ''Night Raid'' is apparently targeting the kind family that is letting Tatsumi stay with them. Tatsumi soon finds out that Night Raid has been going around and killing rich and politically corrupted people with their ultimate goal being to kill the Prime Minister. With the help of the Revolutionary army, Night Raid wishes to bring peace back to the long lasting Empire. Learning the truth of the Empire, Tatsumi is recruited by Night Raid as he becomes an assassin working for the revolutionary army.

Really, if you want to feel how dark exactly this manga is, the first chapter will already let you know. What peaks my interest in this story are the mystical weapons ''Teigu'' which each have an unique ability of their own, making the battles between two assassins extremely interesting to read/watch. They range from poisonous sword like Teigus that can kill with one-cut or scissors that can cut through anything to cute little puppy-like Teigus that can transform into an extremely dangerous beast at the order of their user. Sword-like Teigu, Gun-like Teigu, biological Teigu, Teigus that create ice from nothing, Teigus that can control water, etc. The bloody battles between the Night Raid and the Jaegers are always fun and exciting.

Lets move onto the characters; What makes Akame ga Kill even more interesting are it's extremely fun to watch characters. The author takes time to explain all of his characters' motives, past, anything really. Though, due to this manga's whole dark atmosphere, the characters mostly have quite depressing backgrounds. What makes me like this manga even more is the fact that the author has made an equal number of female and male characters who are, of course, equally impressive and powerful.

The villains of this manga are great. They don't even think of regretting any of their disgusting acts or having a change of heart. A thing like ''Talk no Jutsu'' is absolutely non-existent when it comes to AgK's villains. Though, of course, some villains tend to be quite messed up and cause a lot of inhumane and brutal things. So, if you like heartless, evil characters who don't even take a moment to think about regretting their actions, you're gonna like the villains of AgK.

Over-all, I find all the characters nice and enjoyable. Though, if you're a bit lighthearted, you might not like some villains. So anyways, I'll end this review with the next few sentences. I find this manga extremely enjoyable and I strongly recommend it. If you like dark manga then this is definitely for you.
