Some japanese history...

According to legend certain animals are created with supernatural powers. They can transform themselves into anything they desire, and can even acquire other magical abilities. The Japanese raccoon (tanuki) and the fox (kitsune) are the most popular animals attributed with magical powers.

They are pictured as mischievous rogues who often get themselves into trouble. They can, at times, be frightening creatures, and at other moments be capable of making a negative situation positive. Sometimes they are treated as godly figures and become cultural heroes. The ‘tanuki’ is sometimes seen as a witch, a cannibal monk, or a one-eyed demon who murders his victims with thunder, lightning or earthquakes.
It is said that the have the power to cast powerful illusions.

In some Netsuke figures the ‘tanuki’ appears as a Buddhist monk dressed in robes.

I think that this Ponto thing is equivalent to a blood pact animal, like Hanzo's, Tsunade's, Jiraya's, Naruto's, Oroshimaru's, or Pain's zoo that he keeps in his pocket.

I am curious about the two spikes that look like they are coming off it's shoulders. At first, I thought those were the ends of tails, but I am not sure what they are now.

Maybe it's an image of the monster that comes out of Nagato's back when he is fighting Hanzo? After all, it had a bandage over it's eye.

Masashi Kishimoto really likes using Japanese Folklore in his Manga. Like the one With Naruto and Sasuke in one of the chapter titles and as youve said here the 1st and 9th tailed are very simalr to what you have said there.

As youve said it can cast huge illusiion like how Tobi/Madara described.Theres a big chance that the 10 tailed is based off that.

well the juubi might be a fusion of all beast's since it's made out of them.
but we don't now if its a specific animal because the 8 tails wich everyone tough to be the yamata no orochi and then that Octopus Bull appeared (well its cool but still it came from nowhere)

Last chapter it was revealed that Ponta/Bonta is a raccoon. So far we have only seen unique summoning/beasts. Other then that it's a good theory.

besides their huge size and the ability to talk, aren't toads, snakes, slugs and birds naturally occuring animals?

i didn?t meant "animals" animals if you know what i mean, i just said that htere are many legends about many beasts with animal qualities that have strange poweres and each one of them with a deffierent history...in this case, the tanuki has very similar qualities as the juubi ..

With unique i mean we've seen toads they belong to naruto and Jiraiya, slugs for Tsunade, turtle gai, kakashi dogs, kisame shark, and all hosts got their own creature. we havn't seen kishimoto use the same kind of animal twice. So i doubt if gaara had a raccoon and now ponta appeared, that the Juubi will be a raccoon as well.
