He wanted to lead his clan into a coup, when he knew that Root was spying on them, Shisui was dead, and that Itachi was acting suspicious. Fugaku didn't seem wise at all imo, just quite stubborn and foolish. He was essentially leading his clan to its suicide. Then when Itachi stated acting differently and it was obvious that he didn't support his views, he gave up on him and went to the other younger son who he had neglected and told him not to be like Itachi & that he no longer understood him. That's not very smart. :/

Uhm, I don't think he wanted to fight Itachi. If anything, he was willing to understand Itachi's point of view and accepted that this is what had to happen.

I think that's partly the reason he didn't fight Itachi. He didn't accept his son's point of view and didn't agree with it (his was completely the opposite, which he admitted), but he didn't see any point in making the situation harder on his son than it already was.

That and I think that since Mikoto/Fugaku were sitting like that in the middle of that room prior to Itachi entering, they were aware that the majority of the clan was dead. So since Fugaku's plan failed, he saw no point in engaging combat because it would be pointless.

itachi was 13 but he had the MS... who could **** with him? very few. including old ass hiruzen... maybe danzo, but only cuz itachi didn't develop his juts us yet. like susanoo, or amateratsu.

I like to think he was kind of the Might Gai to Minato's Kakashi. Fugaku trying to be Minato's rival, while Minato doesn't even notice.

As to how strong he is? I'd say strong enough to beat Hiashi.
