Why do the most popular characters have the most haters?

Naruto, Sasuke, Itachi, Minato, Obito, Kakashi, Madara, etc they all have legions and legions of fanboys that worship them to no end, myself included for Lawd Naruto, but there's also an ungodly amount of hate for each character listed.

And 98% of the hate is unjustified, nonsensical hate. Like the kind of hate you hold for the guy who banged your girlfriend or stole your wallet or something personal like that. It's quite polarizing.
