For that my answer is yes. For the question you did before my answer is, no.
The EE and NG are a one time thing and live beyhond their hype (this is to justify my answers).

Even with Gai's 7th gate he took out Kisame and held back Edo Madara.

That I agree with. It was hyped and I suspected it would be used in the final fight, but the power from it and the more than one attack I did not expect.

That's the point i made.
I undestimated the 8th gate because i wasn't expecting that kind of power and it also surpassed its hype because its seemingly above the likes of EMS Madara and Hashirama, who're way stronger than the Gokage themselves.
But, at the end of the day it only happens once and then Gai is gone so... that's not exactly 'real' power. On that note i don't think i underestimated his 'free', reusable power (7th gate and below).
I think i explained myself better now xD

I honestly thought once he used Evening Elephant he would die, the final attack was even more powerful than imagined but the body damage is horrendous! It's a one-time power that makes or breaks it for the side the person's on. Like those suicide attacks in video games. They cause immense damage but can't be used more than once so they need to be used at the right time.

No, since the 8th gate has been hyped to surpass the power of all Hokages. So, i was more or less excepting Gai to beat the living shit out of Madara. He was truly a genius.

Not me. Ever since 6th and 7th Gate, I knew Gai was a monster. Hirudora was beast, I really figured Eighth Gate Gai would be top 10. The difference is phenomenal.

@NBF: He has a last resort to stalemate stronger foes than him. That doesn't equal superiority against any character (at least from a win or lose point of view).
I always considered him solid kage level (w/o cheat codes, same as Kisame). Having said that, i don't think i've under or overestimated Gai.

No one knew the 8 gates can do so much to the "invincible" Madara.

I did not underestimate him. If anything i thought the 8 Gates would do more damage to madara.

Throughout the series i have been waiting to see Gai go 8 Gates. And when it was revealed that only taijutsu would work against the Juubi Jinchuriki I was waiting for both Lee and Gai to step forward. I feel Gai was epic in the recent chapter... but i would have liked it to have done even more damage considering it would be his final attack.

Gai did me proud tho. He fights with the Will of Fire.
