Of course he's a prodigy, when it comes to knowledge he's the best, and he can use that knowledge to fight, but Tobirama can create new things like nothing, Minato can see something and perfect it, Shikamaru had 200 IQ when he was 13 and Kakashi has been an all around amazing shinobi ever since he was born.So it isn't really easy to see that Itachi is more genius than the others

He is dead just like Minato and the other kage, but not totally irrelevant to be honest. Naruto and Sasuke still have flashbacks about him. Itachi's love for both the village and shinobi world as a whole, as well as for his younger sibling are what motivate Sasuke in his decision to become hokage.
