thousand of theories are going around the Base concerning the lineage of the Uzumaki and otsutsuki clan... guess we wont know until, perhaps, later on when kishis decides to let us know.
but if we want proof that the Uzumaki's are descendants of the hermit, we just have to look at the hermit's clan symbol on his back...

Nagato is an Uzumaki. This is the reason he can Use Rinnegan effectively. Therefore, he must be descended from Hagoromo, not his brother.

You do know that Naruto is a Transgranter or whatever. Uzumaki are said to be distance blood relatives to the Senju. Senju are descendants of Ashura.

Listen people, Hagoromo's descendants are Senju and Uzumaki(The red hair was probably inherited from Hagoromo) and probably some other clans/families who are scattered across the globe from Ashura and Uchiha(only) from Indra. Hagoromo's brother probably inherited the Byakugan and the Hyuuga descended from him.(Despite the fact people claim that Hagoromo's brother sired both the Hyuuga and Uzumaki, I think that only the Hyuuga descended from him and not the Uzumaki). But to be sincere I honestly think that Senju/Uzumaki and Uchiha didn't descend directly from the brothers, it's probably that after the brothers death they reincarnated into people from random families and these were the ones who gave rise to the 3 clans. In the case of Ashura it's probably that he reincarnated into one person and when that person died and his transmigration was over he didn't reincarnate into his descendants but into another person also from a random family and the first's descendants became Senju while the other's became Uzumaki. When it comes to the Uchiha however, it's probably that Indra reincarnated into a person and when that person died he reincarnated into that same person's descendants.

Hagoromo had 2 children ( ashura *senju* and indra *uchiha* ) and hagoromo's brother had 2 children as well ( no name *hyuuga* and no name * uzumaki*) see?
