The revelation about Naruto being Ashura's incarnation has caused a lot of people to reexamine Neji's belief in fate/predestination; sure, Naruto worked hard, but he had so many things going for him (incredible reservoir of power sealed in his body, superior genetic heritage, child of prophecy, trained by several elite shinobi, etc).
So, that being said, which Naruto characters still prove that you can achieve great strength without being a "child of destiny"?
I'll start with the most obvious: Might Gai. Lacking ability as a child with ninjutsu or genjutsu and hailing from what seemed to be a laughable background, he trained his ass off until he became an elite Jounin. He passed down this ethos to Rock Lee, who also became a powerful shinobi despite his handicaps.
