Some string theory physicians say that we indeed live in a Blackhole, and the string theory, which is the explanation we give most things nowdays, accepts both big jill and big crunch as "endings" for the universe.
Again, this is not an truthful explanation but a theory. Science is not the end-all of knowledge production and your original question of why we debate things we don't know is now very confusing, the Big Bang/Crunch is not something we can know, we don't have empirical data for these events, and again subjectivity remains. All we can do is debate the known unknown until it can be tested and repeated until we know the limits of possible answers.
