When Gai was in 6th Gate Kakshi was uinsg MS and they both held their own against the edo Jin even in their beast mode. This is why they are rivals. Gai has the gates that put him on par with Kakashi's Sharingan techs.

7th Gate Gai = Kakashi using Kamui at his current state.

8th Gate Gai > Kakashi. But this would result in a draw since after Gai defeats Kakashi, he would die.

They have always been equal. Just like Sasuke and Naruto.

kakshi seemed to do okay against Obito in their 1 on 1 match in the Kamui dimension. Gai doesn't have ninjutsu where Kakashi (supposedly) has over 100o jutsu. Plus his sharingan allows him to read Gai's movements.

I think the MS would allow him to keep up with Gai's movements once he starts entering the 4th-7th gates. Unlike Sasuke, Kakashi is fast enough to react to the movements. not to mention Kakashi has an assorment mid to long range jutsu to keep Gai at a distance.

Then there is Kamui his most dangerous move yet.

As for Gai, the speed and power the gates offer him are extremely problematic for kakashi, but Kakashi is smart fighter whereas Gai is kind of straight forward and head on with his attacks. He can probably tank a good number of kakashi's techniques and he is versed in fighting the Sharingan so catching him in genjutsu is unlikely without some thorough planing.

technically sasuke and naruto are not equals because all their fights have been one sided and sasuke gets the victory every time...

I think gai can beat kakashi with hirudora or morning peacock. It's a matter of outlasting him because in gates gai should be quick enough to dodge kamui and kakashi might use 1 or 2 clones to trick gai but in the end gai has more stamina. So if he can stay alive long enough he can win. If he goes 8 gates he wins easily but dies too.
