They both have different usages of power, being dead over an high level of power does not make Gai any weaker or that that sort of power irrelevant.
My point is still same as before: They are equals for differing powers and abilities. That's why they make a nice duo.

Uhhhh, the fact that Gai himself said that Kakashi was always ahead of him. And how it showed Kakashi beat Gai in the chuunin exams. And Kakashi knows what the 8 gates are capable of considering he was the one who kept telling us that it gives power stronger than the kage. That alone means Kakashi would have a plan to counter it before Gai even powers up to attack. Nowhere in the manga was it implied that they are equals. Go ahead and show me one scan.
Oh yeah? Why is that? The only reason why Gai is even assaulted Madara was because of Kakashi's Kamui warping the Omyondon so that Gai can even hit him. Or what about Minato tanking the black orbs so that Gai didn't get 1 shot like he would have? lol fail.

Gai respects Kakashi and he flatters Kakashi by saying that Kakashi is stronger than him, because Gai always wanted to compete with Kakashi. Manga feats says Gai is stronger. Kakashi could never harm Jubi Madara by himself, even if he lost his life.

One of the times Gai said that, he was thinking it to himself and didn't say it so you're not disproving what I said. Again, I asked you to show me one scan where it is implied that they are equals.

Except that fight only proved that PHYSICALLY the might be equals but the whole time Gai had to rely on Kakashi's intel for them to stay alive and keep fighting which is ultimately Gai's downfall against Kakashi making Kakashi > Gai.
Gai outright blitzes Kakashi in 7G.
They've been portrayed as equals because what Gai lacks in, Kakashi makes up for, and vice-versa. It has nothing to do with who's better than the other, it's to do with them working as a team and covering up each other's weaknesses which it's exactly why they're one of the best duos out there.

...What? That does not prove anything regarding to their levels.
Even so Kakashi at some point relied on Gai's method and intel of not looking Uchiha in eyes and fight.
