Because he wasn't the slightest bit overwhelmed by the attack. There was no counter there, it was Madara's attempt to kill Gai before the explosion.

Gai beats 99% of the narutoverse pre-war- that is probably still going to be true EoS

-however guy looses to quite a few people pre-war -mostly the top teirs or the individuals who can survive a 7th gate onslought.

1) Obito- pre war obito phases out until guy runs out of gated form.
2) Nagato- Six paths nagato wins because guy willnot be able to defeat all 6 paths before he runs out of gated mode time-furthermore he wouldnot be able to to find nagato before he runs out of gate/becomes exhausted
3) Tsunade-With her seal activated, I believe she could tank Guy's seventh gate attacks and then go after guy after he is out of gates mode
4) Naruto (sage mode) + six tailed- I can see guy beating sage mode naruto- but six tailed+ wrecks him/ kyubi is in a league of its own when it comes to tailed beasts.
5) Orochimaru (healthy)-considering he tanked tsunade's rampage, 4 tailed naruto, I think he can outlast guys 7th gate. I don't think taijustu will beat orochimaru's white snake form.

Honerable Mention
1) Jiriaya- he has some fairly hax justu toad stomach, underworld swamp, sage mode, genjustu, frog collab- gamabunta combination-depending on wethor guy goes into gates immediatly or not will determine the match- if he gives Jiriaya time to enter SM and summon- he looses.
2) juugo- might be able to survive guy's gated attacks- after guy will be defensless and he would KO him.- this fight depends if he can tank the attack
3) Kakuzo- his earth defense + 5 hearts may be able to tank Gais attack-( guys attacks doesnot penetrate/cut it more pressure based) kakuzo could probably tank that.
4) Hidan-guy could destroy hidan easy- but without knowledge, guy wouldnot know how to take him out and might loose ( by exhausting himself trying to kill hidan etc..)

?) I am on the fense about killer B- I think they are largly equals- I don't know if 7th gate is enough to take out the ox, but the tornado spin destroyed a forest+ it would keep guy at distance- so I think this fight goes eithor way.

SS3 is much greater than SS2 so much so that an SS3 can take on hundreds if not thousands of SS2s.

The same idea applies to NV. Nagato can use CT, but the true final power, Hagaromo can create the Moon(billions of times larger)

Exactly, and people forget about the gradual increase of the 1-5 gates too! Just look at the speed increase Lee got from the 5th Gate. For Gai he'd be able to stay in that form for quite a long time, considering how his body's sustained the 7th gate multiple times in one day.

It's like, "If they survive Hirodura they win," when it's not even a given that Gai will use Hirodura. He might gradually increase his Gates, drastically increasing his fighting time.

Yes, but he'll be so focused on not looking at Itachi's eyes, that he'll become vulnerable to Itachi's other genjutsus(finger genjutsu for instance).

Base Gai has already shown feats to counter the basic mechanics of Kamui, so it's debatable whether he could defeat him.

Gai with gates is obviously faster than Minato's foot speed but It's impossible to be faster than teleportation. He has faster striking speed which males up for that.
