Itachi killed them to make sure no more blood would be spilled because of his people. He got to save his brother from being slaughtered aswell. Instead of everyone dying, Itachi killed off the problem and continued with his own personal plans.

You're acting like he had a choice. Either it was to kill his family or have war breakout whereby every single side would've sustain grievous injuries in which case thousands of people would've died. So tell me what manipulation and brainwashing did he do? Sorry I must sound like a Itachi Fan Boy but I give credit where it's due.
