Theory
My theory is that Hashiramas sage mode IS the most powerful sage mode,
and the original sage mode that the S06P used.
The other sage modes, Dragon, Toad, and slug (unconfirmed) , are branches
of the original. Perhaps the three animals were the sages summons, and he taught them sage mode.
Now what I believe is the reason WHY Hashirama can go into sage mode
without training at any of the sacred places is because it is in his bloodline. He is 100% Senju.
So why didn't Tobirama, or Fodder Senju #466 get sage mode you ask?
Well the answer is simple. Why did only Madara and Izuna Unlock MS in his time?
Because its a rare thing to do. Just like unlocking sage mode as a Senju would be.
The fodders already had the physical body of the Senju, just like the fodder Uchiha had 3 tomoe Sharingans.
I'm sure if there were more 100% Senjus in Narutos time at least one would unlock Sage mode, Just like Itachi and sasuke unlocked MS.
The Uchihas gift is the eyes. The Sharingan.
The Senjus gift is the body. Strong life force and high chakra.
So when the Uchihas evolve their Sharingan, they get the Mangekyo Sharingan/Eternal Mangekyo
( If they take their brothers eyes, yes the Uchihas are twisted freaks, and note that EMS is NOT
stronger than MS, only you never lose your light)
When the Senjus evolve their physical body (Which has only been done by the S06P),
They get the purest form of Sage mode.
Now you may ask What about the Rinnegan, where does the Senju evolve there.
That's when you have to remember that the Rinnegan is a mix between the body and the eyes,
which Madara currently has, and the only one to unlock it since the S06P.
Nagato and Obito were borrowed Rinnegans.
Conclusion
Just like the Uchihas can upgrade their Sharingan to MS/EMS, My theory is that Senjus can
also upgrade their physical body/chakra to sage mode. Hashirama was the only one to unlock
sage mode of his time, and Madara was the only one who unlocked EMS of his time.
So obviously its a rare thing to get, and only the strongest would acquire it.
Side theory
Its possible that there is another upgrade to Senju sage mode
that I guess you can say can go with EMS (Even though EMS and MS are basically the same, you just never go blind), and maybe Naruto will unlock that soon.
We just have to wait and see.
