Well.....I see it this way. By manga the Viz translation Madara says that when he had gotten revived that nao he can fight for real. He goes on to say it is not a fight unless you have blood, heart, etc.
Also...Madara says that him getting revived was his counter attack...in which he was speaking directly to Hashirama...so Madara used his counter attack and Hashirama could not defend against it. Madara broke the gates because he wasl excited...imo meaning he could have at anytime, but was bored.
He was not fighting for real by Viz translation.
He didn't even consider it a fight by Viz translation.
Their fight wasn't over until we saw how Hashirama dealt with the counter attack, in which he didn't.
So Madara defeated Hashirama...I feel this is quite obvious. Even if anyone says he didn't as an Edo in the end Madara defeated Hashirama and nao he is unable to fight. No matter how you slice it in the end Hashirama was defeated by Madara. Which version is up to you to decide.
Some say Edo Madara lost, some say he was playing possum. I believe the Viz...in which he says he wasn't fighting for real. Similar to how he fought the Gokage....just how I feel. All that matters in light of your question....is that in the end Madara did indeed defeat Hashirama.
Also....while it was 4vs
1, and also blind. So it's your choice to decide.... Though I'm not trying to excite any Hashirama fans this is just how I feel as far as the OPs question.
