blocking an attack from someone you're in a fight with is different from finding someone. Obito had recently moved through guy when he did that. Guy knew exactly where obito was, so this really doesn't prove anything.
Well Gai did fight in mist at his division:
And could intercept attacks he could not see:
I don't thing basic mist is an issue (any skilled ninja with good reaction can put a fight in mist); the deal is boil release and its effects. He can't tank obviously; but both Lee and him displayed endurance for physical pain due to their fighting style; gates cause a severe amount of pain in the user that's why i think Gai can swallow a little beating; he would lose some skin but he has chances of going gates in time; this also depends on the spreading rate of the mist.

Doesn't change the fact that he still intercepted the attack none the less. There are plenty of more examples in the manga where a shinobi is not facing their opponent or isnt even in a battle and get ambushed with a attack and still evade it without looking.
