There's nothing wrong with the topic of what you're race is. EVERY topic on NB has stupid people who only aim to offend and start flamewars. I assume then that we should all just shut the hell up then, right?

Correcting ignorant statements = impressing? Oh. Well ignorance is bliss as they say. And I don't see how someone saying they would rather embrace diversity instead of discussing what divides us is such a bad thing. Getting into feelings make people say so many crazy things.

It promotes the thought of noticing people around you that are different thus categorizing them.
I'd rather see adults/teens behaving like some toddlers do; Completely oblivious to why someone would want to categorize another. Sure, barely anyone on here has serious dislike to another race but still, you keep making it a matter to discuss.

How is it hypocritical? If anything, it's redundant. We are diverse. Yes, everyone and their relatives know that. Most of us embrace that. So why should anyone feel the need to constantly discuss that? How many times does one person need to know the race of every member here? What is that going to do? Unfortunately, it will divide us even more. I'm not saying everyone does this, but people do tend to treat others differently due to their race. Is it fair? No. But does it happen? Yes. He's saying it's best to not bring it up any more than it needs to be because it causes unnecessary tensions.

I concede to your point that there are bigots out there who are inherently racist, but our focus should be educating the people on how to point out differences in a civil, intellectual way and appreciate, not belittle, things that are part of a person's identity, like their skin color or culture.

I agree with your input. It's unrealistic to just completely put a hold to talking about skin color and such.

I understand your point of view, and I honestly wish there were more people out there with your mindset. But with the world we live in, in this day and age, it is idealistic. We can't educate those who do not want to be educated (in regards to the racists out there). And I don't think Yow is trying to promote a sense of "colour blindness" per se, more of not putting too much focus on race. These threads are redundant. Like I said, how many times must we say our race and our culture? Aside from the first few times, how will the next dozen be of any help to this cause?

I know you mean no harm, and I am sure the OP didn't, but threads like these aren't helping anything. If anything, they are detrimental. People are going to belittle and treat people of different races differently depending on their mindset. It isn't fair nor is it right, but sadly, it happens.

What we should strive for is the time when we can say "Your skin is different than mine, but that doesn't matter" not "Shhh, we can't talk about having different skin even though we all know it!" Again, if you are hurt, spare me the complaints. It's really not doing anything for you but wasting your time. If that's what you got from it and if you are oh so offended, then clearly you think it applies to you. Sorry for you, but my life doesn't revolve around your feelings. If you got hurt, oh well, move on. It should have been common knowledge. I corrected you and the other member to insure that no one else made the same mistake. I believe I met my goal in that so if you are still feeling butthurt over me posting a general statement, then I suggest you get out of your feelings. No one said that discussion of different races should be banned or taboo. Where you got that from when we clearly said it was redundant is beyond me. Nothing is wrong with discussing it a few times, but when it is a constant topic, it gets counterproductive.

And I am pretty sure YowYan mentioned that he was also mentioning how people are outside and not referring to the people in this thread specifically. Make sure you get what people are trying to say before you want to come at them.
