The definition of 'genius' is subjective. I, personally, think that he is nowhere near a genius, by my definition of the word. However, the definition of genius is as follows: "a person who displays exceptional intellectual ability, creativity, or originality, typically to a degree that is associated with the achievement of unprecedented insight."

Typically, I think of a genius as someone like Tesla, Newton, or Da Vinci, people who make vast improvements to their respective fields. Kishi, not so much. Is Kishi exceptionally intelectual? I'm not sure. Is he creative? Sure. Is he original? Not really. He uses DragonBall and mythology as his main inspiration. Has he done anything that no one has done before? Not really. Ninjas with superpowers have been done before.

I say, no, he's not a genius, but you can say that he is.

It's a known fact that in ordeujr to be creative, and artistic, one must be highly intellectual.

I think that in the end Kishimoto will be considered a genius for writing naruto BUT when you compare each chapter weekly, there are times that his chapters may not live up to my standards. Ofc, it's my favourite manga but at times it has a bit too slow pace. However, when you consider his manga as a whole, I would say that he's a genius for being the first mangaka I know to make such inspirational characters with a very humanistic nature, who had real motives for their doings other than simply controlling the world. It also makes you question on deep, important subjects and all that time while he keeps it interesting. We should also take into consideration that Naruto is an ongoing story for 14 years so it's respectable if he can't always make it amazing.

In any case, I consider Kishimoto a genius for giving a new meaning to the word "villain" and escaping from the one dimensional characters, at least as for the villains. However, I believe that he should have used his already characters in a better way. Even though the introduction of K11 was epic, they didn't get as much spotlight as they deserve.

Oda places minor details in the telling of his story that become major points in the future and he started this in the first years of his serialization. Of course manga writers foreshadow things like power ups and final villans, but Oda foreshadows countries, political conflicts, and races of different individual far in advance. While Kishimoto chooses to focus on set characters, Oda's creates nations of people that are unique and remain relevant far beyond there arc. Though people say Oda has a habit of not killing people off when he should its those same people that play key roles in the story later. No one is forgotten in OP and everything conflict that the main characters go through have great affects on the world on the world around them.

If Kishi wouldn't have bit off more than he could chew with this war arc I might give you that. Naruto pt1 was awesome and everything leading up to the Pain arc in part 2 was perfectly written.

The Gokage arc was really good, but following up after the Pain arc was too tough. The War arc was too much going on all at once, great fights like Kakashi vs the 7 swordsmen were skipped, and the edos holding back were plot devices. The Madara/Obito arc was better, but Kishi constantly giving powerups and heals to characters ruined it.
