It's innovative and creative, there has been nothing like this anime ever. It's completely original in every aspect.
The plot is fierce and well written, the good writting will have you fall for a character and then they'll be killed off and ripped right from you. It also creates the atmosphere perfectly and immerses you in it.

Oh really please tell me more Mr.know it all. I didn't like this show simply for the death, gore, or animation.. those are just simply bonuses. I love the show because of the characters and their backstories.. the mysteries surrounding the titans stuff like that because it makes you question things. This show is not simply about action.. there are episodes where it's slow paced and has little to no action episodes that are more for the story/character development.. anyways you might've not felt suspenseful or drawn to the character's but that's you, you have your reasons but there are plenty of people who think otherwise.
Not everyone is drawn to show for the reasons you listed and people will have their opinions.. if you feel that way so be it.

When I first started to read I was in shock too because it was so boring,but when you read a couple of chapters and watch anime,you get the idea of the series. And I believe it is pretty good. It is very similar to Claymore.

SNK is great. D plot is kul and the action is pretty neat. But I tink the anime is wat drew many pple to the show, the anime is simply Awesome and the opening theme in the first few episodes(b4. They changed it) was nice, it always pumps me up for the show. Overall its realy good, favourite Ch are corporal Levy(boss), mikasa(badass)
Japan overrates everything that's for sure , I never understood why people like OP or any of the supposedly big 3, I don't like them one bit & i'm just stuck with Naruto till it ends .
As far as AOT goes , It's popular not because of the gore , personally i don't see any gore here , unlike hellsing I believe that's the name , people are loving this cause it's something different & fresh .
1/The females Characters are not useless at all .
2/The 104 Rookies who are basically just like K11 , all do have an equal amount of panels , background , backstories / development etc .(there is no BS there )
3/You can have a chapter without the main characters of the story & you are ok with it , why ? cause the other characters are so good , that i actually do care about them .
3/The action is amazing , the titan fights show UFC styles which i really enjoy .
4/ the story keeps you on your toes .
5/When they need to talk , they do it really well without boring the reader .
6/Every character has development .
7/Deaths mean something & has fair amount of good emotion/feels.
8/One advantage i feel AOT has over most of the popular series right now , is that we know it's ending at 20 volumes , so it's not gonna get drag out like some do .
This is just my opinion of course , so you don't need to bash it if you don't agree .

Because of the anime. It's actually pretty good compared to all the moe/schoolgirl/highschool crap they've been producing for years now. It's refreshing to say the least. Also, the quality of the animation, voice acting, soundtracks, openings and endings are top notch. It's no surprise that this anime became so popular at all.
The manga is pretty good too. It's certainly interesting to follow, but I wouldn't say it's brimming with originality and intelligent plot, like many seem to believe.

well first of all thank you for being respectful
second I didn't say everyone liked it just because of it. The wuestion was why it is so popular, why MULTIPLE people like it and a LOT of those who like it like it because of those 2 reasons, by far the 2 most prevailing reasons for liking AOT I've seen are 1. animation and 2. its different because ppl actually die and there's a lot of gore ... fact
so me saying a lot of it's popularity is attributed to those 2 reasons it completely reasonable
also it's just a fact that a lot of people enjoy watching blood, gore, deaths, torcher and despair because all people have something primal inside that that excites them at that prospect, some can surpress that particular side of them and some like to indulge in it, it's the same as with ***, some like it and some think it's tabu and wrong in certain aspects. Blood, death and despair is just another kind of fanservice.
but the character stuff, yes, it was merely my opinion ofc but is that a reason not to reply to me politely? ... well I guess where you come from ... yes, yes it is
