I don't know about other people here on NB, but music is probably my main hobby - I spend nearly my entire day either listening to music or playing guitar (even in class I have an earbud in, lol ). My question is... why do we connect with music so much and like it so much?

I know the lyrics can make us connect with the song, that's understandable, but purely from a sound standpoint; why do certain things sound good to us and even make us emotional sometimes? For those of you who play an instrument, you may know that many popular types of music follow pretty well established chord patterns. But that is not all I'm talking about here. I'm thinking of the fact that many of us (I do at least) really connect with music at a deep level that we don't share with a lot else.

Maybe I'm different, or maybe you agree with me. I appreciate your thoughts, as always! Thanks! =D

You can connect to it, its appealing and motivational. I'm always listening to music during work outs, before basketball games and when i'm just chilling like right now.

Songs are inspired by emotion, which in turn reveals emotion through sound. Listeners have emotions so it's easy to understand and relate to specific tone of sounds.

Because language gives us an identity and with language comes words and words carry connotations. We take the connotation of the words in the lyrics and it evokes feeling.

I can't think of any Biological reason that would make us enjoy sound off the top of my head, but I do know that we used sound in prehistoric times to survive. This is so much so that, even though we can't hear it, we can perceive 50hz of sound waves (the growl of a lion ready to feast). Hearing this low frequency causes fear and dread in people (hearing it long enough even causes hallucinations due to the fear).

After the sound passes, we laugh about it later and celebrate our survival. I wanna say that music has been a part of us for as long as we've been humans (and then some), purely for how much of an impact sound has had on our existence. If it didn't, we wouldn't have a use for hearing!

I also am usually surrounded by music and have a fond place for it. I play guitar, bass, and Saxophone.

I don't know why music appeals to me so much, maybe it's the mood setters that words or people can't give. Maybe it's the harmony of creating temporary nirvana through the art of instruments. Maybe even the lyrics of song that touch the notes on the heart when understood and related.

There are many types of music, instruments, sections, that really anyone can connect to in some way. Music to me isn't just a hobby, or even just art. Music is apart of my heart and soul that opens things in my heart in areas nothing else can.

The brain takes in the sound and makes us experience different emotions. Music controls your emotions so in a ways it can be considered a drug. Opening your mind to different views and experiencing emotions we never felt before. Makes it worth while to keep listening.

Dude I too am a musician and I play the Bass Guitar. Music is the language of the people, its the only way humans can truly understand one another... Its the most beautiful thing, and I have found my enlightenment from playing and creating my own music. My theory for why certain things sound good to certain people is because music is a frequency. Its a frequency that you can tune yourself to; my frequency adheres to Rock, Funk, Soul, Metal, Heavy Metal, Grunge, Classic Rock, honestly the list goes on, for me I am in tune with any genre that requires a guitar, bass guitar, and a drum set. However, Hip hop does not make sense to me... at least not the fake shit that is today, but 2pac, run dmc and the old stuff makes sense because they are real to themselves. Music is great man, I could honestly go on forever and ever about this. Led Zeppelin was the band that single handedly changed my fate forever, the first time I heard No Quarter.... it hit me so deep, its hard to describe over the internet, but I will never forget it, from that day I picked up a brand new bass guitar, and ive played it ever since then... best thing i ever did was put down my xbox controller and pick up my bass, havent played xbox since then, actually sold it. hahaha

Would you like the biological answer or the philosophical one? Because I have various numbers of each.
