Ben Affleck is set to star as Batman in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel sequel, Warner Bros. has announced.

As reported by The Wrap, Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production at Warner Bros. made the following statement earlier today:

“We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”

“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman," added director Synder. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”

“We are so thrilled that Ben is continuing Warner Bros.’ remarkable legacy with the character of Batman," continued Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution President Sue Kroll. He is a tremendously gifted actor who will make this role his own in this already much-anticipated pairing of these two beloved heroes."

Warner Bros. has a longstanding relationship with Affleck. His most recent hit for the studio was 2012's Argo, which won Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards. Affleck's next directorial effort, Live By Night, will also be produced by Warner.

Affleck is no stranger to the superhero gig, having played Daredevil in the 2003 flick of the same name.

The Man of Steel sequel, which will likely be called Batman vs Superman, was announced at Comic-Con earlier this year. The film will be penned by Snyder and Man of Steel screenwriter David S Goyer, and is currently slated to open worldwide on July 17, 2015. The sequel will reunite Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Laurence Fishburne, Amy Adams and Diane Lane.

Man of Steel has taken in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office to date.

Anyways, I'm very cool with this, but nobody on this planet is more excited than Kevin Smith, I imagine. One of his best friends is Batman!

Ben Affleck knows how to direct himself, that's why he's become a good actor, imo. I pray to the god that I don't believe in that he does well as Batman in this movie, then he gets to be the director and main star of the next Batman franchise.

His portrayal's I've always found to be too emotionally vulnerable. Batman may be physically vulnerable but emotionally spiritually, he is the man of steel.

Batman's psyche is obviously vulnerable. That's one of the biggest traits of his character. But Batman isn't a crybaby or anything. I'm not sure if Affleck can play that very subtle emotional vulnerability.

I've stopped doubting actors as villians or heros..we all thought Heath Ledger who was a "pretty boy" to some people wasn't going to pull off the Joker role, and look how well that turned out. So it is possible. I think it will be interesting.

As for his psyche, allowances must be made for a guy wearing a bat costume. Honestly, I hated the Man of Steel. Superman forced to kill Zod? Not so Super if you ask me.

Killing Zod isn't super? Do you know what your saying?

Though it is your opinion.... but you should know, BATMAN and SUPERMAN will kill if they have to.

First, it was the "Superman is such a child, corny as hell, fruity pebble"

When they actually make a real life Superman.. with the right emotions, thats hes shown to face in the cartoons and comics...

Hes apparently to dark.. o_O.

Why not Christian Bale?
Cause noone knows wth he says as batman.

I actually loved that part of the movie. You have to remember that it was an origin story. Things weren't supposed to go perfectly. This is the phase where he learns from his experiences, and decides to never kill again, no matter what. Other than that, I thought the movie was decent :p

It depends how you view it. I loved MOS. It wasn't a Superman movie. It was a Clark Kent/Kal-el movie where he was lost and finding himself. I believe the events in MOS will shape up the Superman we all know and love.
