Now when I look for a new story to enjoy, I usually head straight for the plot preview and genre (perhaps a few reviews) to see if I like it. At first, some of the overviews sound pretty ridiculous. It makes me wonder how a good story could come from such a theme. Maybe you've even checked a few episodes and hated it at first. But there are also many times that an anime/manga/manhwa or otherwise has soared above and beyond what I thought would come out of it.

I'll name one example: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (TTGL). Now I've seen a lot of dispute about whether part 1 or part 2 was better but as for myself, I really didn't think the beginning episodes were that great. I mean Part 1 still had great moments! But I really liked how they kicked it off with the Time-Skip. The change in atmosphere... it just felt well done. For me, what this show represented was great development. Which is why I might not have liked it at first, but have come to appreciate the series as a whole by the time it was over.

Anybody have their own personal experience?

Oh I just checked and it's based off The Sword of Truth series right? Can't help but feel I've heard that name before... but I don't think I read any of them yet. Which is good I guess since it would make it spoiler-free *_*

Fairy Tail. I went on it thinking it was something mediocre at best but now it's one of my favourite animes.

Code Geass - Didn't even finish the first episode first time I watched it. It looked like it was gonna be pure Mecha fights and I'm not into that. Second time I finished the R1 and R2 within few days and now it's in my top 3 Anime and holds the first place for the most epic ending.

Eden of the East was a really suprising anime. It was extremely good, but I had passed it up a few times because of the description of it on netflix. It's one of the better written animes I've seen.

I was also suprised by Kids on The Slope, it was an extremely deep show.

Berserk's manga, the first volumes were a bit boring but once the Golden Age arc began, I got really hooked and the story just went uphill from there on

As for anime:

Hajime no Ippo -> Never been into boxing, but damn the characters are so well developed and the series is extremely entertaining
Gintama -> semi-low expectations, but the cast is pure gold and even though comedy is main focus in the story, there's still great drama mixed in

One piece. I expected it to be lame since all my friends didn't like it, but its now my favorite.

The Breaker. I was more into super powered manga, but after reading this I was more into martial arts or realistic fighting(as realistic as a manga can be). Vagabond, holyland, and Vinland saga are a couple that come to mind that I started reading because of The Breaker. I still likesuper powered manga, but you could say it was The Breaker's fault for my distaste for DBZ like powers.

Hajime no Ippo. Seriously? A boxing manga? Lame!! (I have now caught up with the latest chapter lol)

Wolf guy ookami no monshou. Only good werewolf manga out there. Then again there isDance in the Vampire Bund.

Samurai Champloo.
I've always heard about this anime and thought it was stupid cause the name's pretty lame. But once I watched it, it was great. The characters, fighting and plot was awesome. Plus it had lots of humour which I enjoyed.

Either D.Gray Man or Black Butler ...

D.Gray man because i had never heard of it before, and the main badguy looked pretty sketchy, and the plot seemed weird.. i tried it and it had some of the most amazing characters in anime, a decent plot and an awesome premise and fighting style..

Black Butler because i thought it was just some , emo, gothic anime..which it is ..but it had so much more X3

It is mediocre. Lol

OT: The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, I underestimated it and now I anticipate it every week.
