However, you can turn this around and use these large scale jutsu to cover what an ally or clone my be setting up while your opponent deals with the oncoming fire.
Now, be careful with the substitution technique, while it is pretty useful it is limited to short range. So if you the fire jutsu covers all of short range around you and beyond... you will die. As I said, avoiding these jutsu are difficult and it is therefore best outright counter the fire... with water or dark release for example.
