i don't think he meant literally. I think as in giving him courage to win his fight, because against pain hinata really didn't do a ****ing thing to save him.

With neji - seeing hinata try-hard and neji talking constant shit made naruto fight even harder to defeat neji. If not for hinata's struggle he would have lost because he wouldn't have been so determined to prove neji's shit wrong.

With pain - once again, seeing hinata's struggle and try-hard + the fact that she said she loved him gave him the kick he needed to save himself. If not for hinata he wouldn't explode into 6 tails and freed himself from those black rods.

Apart from chunnin exams, there's no other manga panel of them doing a single thing together.
