Why Are They Called the Z Fighters?

I've noticed this since coming to America, but why are the heroes from DragonBall called the "Z Fighters"? They're not called that in France, where I'm from. It just sounds childish and stupid.

I can't remember if they ever referred to eachother as z warriors, sometimes they are called the earth's special forces. The commentator/Announcer for DBZ called them the Z warriors, Just a nickname thats all.

They don't have a name like that. We just call them " nos heros" - our heros. or something like that.

Z is a common sequel marking in Japan. Take the game Tenchi for example(A ninja game for the 360) The original was called Tenchi, the sequel was called Tenchi Z.
