madara wanted to make it look really believable and not suspicious and he knew his way was different than Hashi's.
He wanted to force the world in its entirety to obey his vision and force them into genjutsu.
He left the village like Sasuke did to get stronger than defeat his rival.. (itachi/Hashi) and gained non uchiha powers.
non uchiha powers ( kurama/ snake jutsu, drugs)
Madara engaged Hashi in a death match repeatedly to bring himself to the brink of the end of life..
(not sure if he intended to almost die, but it could have been part of his plan) since he wanted the Rinnegan.
He made believable that he wanted to destroy the Leaf so Hashi wouldn't suspect anything of a plan.
but those are just my thoughts. ^_^
