My Theory is that Obito couldn't use the Rinne Tinsei by himself, neither could he persuade Pain to revive Rin and he knew it, so maybe that was the plan from the start, to trick Madara by trying to resurect himself, but instead getting Rin alive.

Exactly why there would be no point to Madara forcing Obito into using Rinne Tensie, unless madara can control who it is used on because obviously Madara wouldn't be Obito's first choice.... :|
