Hello everyone.

Gyakuten Saiban 5, or Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 5 - Dual Destinies, will be released in Japan the 25th of July, and in Europe/North America sometime during the fall.

For a new fan of the series such as myself, this is incredibly exciting and I can't wait till I get my greasy paws on it, and it'll be incredibly hard to avoid spoilers (spoilers, I won't be able to stop myself)

But enough about little ol' me. I do have some genuine concern about this game and it has nothing to do with the game only being sold digitally here in the West. I'm talking about 'pulling a Metal Gear Solid 2'.

For those who do not know, Metal Gear Solid is famous for one character in particular - Solid Snake. But do you know what happened in the sequel? A new, now widely loathed character took his place as a main character instead. Granted, Snake was still around, being even more badass than he was in the previous game, but he was still not the protagonist. Raiden was.

This took the entire fanbase by surprise. Konami had only showed Snake in the trailers and not mentioned Raiden AT ALL.

See where I'm going with this? Phoenix Wright has not been a protagonist for EIGHT YEARS. We've had two spin-offs where he was only a cameo in the background and one 'main title' contribution named 'Apollo Justice' where he was reduced to an irresponsible hobo side character.

In short: now, at last, a new Phoenix Wright game will come out where it looks like he'll be the main character, but I'm afraid they'll pull a Metal Gear Solid 2 on us and have us play around with Apollo for the majority of the game.

What do you think?

It's titled Phoenix Wright. In the spin-offs, or whatever you want to call them, they were titled after the main characters. Apollo Justice was about Apollo, and Edgeworth was about Miles. This is titled Phoenix Wright so it's about Phoenix as the main character. No need to worry.

I am well aware. The fact remains that Apollo will be playable and go up against Klavier and investigate with both Trucy and Athena. And so far we've only seen Phoenix on the tutorial trial - kind of like Metal Gear Solid 2, hence my worry.

I'm not trying to hate on Apollo or anything, I just feel like they need to re-establish Phoenix Wright as the real protagonist, especially after the abomination that was his 'character development' in the fourth game.

As a side note, I wonder what Maya's up to...Pearl is in the game, but when it comes to Maya the developers say that their lips are 'sealed'

This game apparently takes place one year after the events depicted in Apollo Justice, which cleared Phoenix's name and allowed him to practice law again. I didn't really mind playing as Apollo, and most certainly not as Edgeworth, but now that Phoenix has his career back, it would be horrible if he wasn't the main protagonist.

I read about this title today actually, and I got really excited when I read it. I can't believe how it looks compared to the other titles. Though I'm still waiting for Ace Attorney Investigations 2 to be released in western countries as well.

I agree with you.

I understand what they were trying to do with Apollo Justice, I really do, and I don't blame them for it. However, including Phoenix Wright to that extent and completely kill his character? That was unnecessary AND made people lose all focus on Apollo and instead wonder about the previous protagonist. It's one of the biggest counterproductive things I have ever seen in all my years as a gamer - The one who was supposed to bring something new to the series, with his own side characters and motives, was thoroughly ignored and people just kept wondering about Phoenix, Maya and Edgeworth. The fact that they more or less seem to ignore the events in Apollo Justice (such as the jurist system, Phoenix being a hobo etc) is evidence enough that this was a horrible mistake.

That is why I want Phoenix as the undisputed main character. If there are five cases like it usually is, then don't give Apollo more than one, for the love of all that is geeky. (Which seems possible considering that Apollo and Phoenix have a fight in a trailer - Something about Apollo's truth being different from Phoenix's - God this game is Japanese...)

As for Investigations...I'm not that big of a fan of it. They obviously tried making it different, but it feels way to similar to warrant an entire spin-off series. The first one is a good game no doubt about it, what with some delicious Edgeworth humiliation humor which is always appreciated, but it's not Ace Attorney good.
