Itachi could easily defeat Orochimaru and yet was scared of Jiraiya

I was rewatching Naruto episodes, watching the big moments, and I noticed Itachi was fearful of fighting Jiraiya because he was a legendary sannin. And Jiraiya beat him rather easily when they did fight.

But when it came to Orochimaru, he wasn't worried at all and beat him with ease.

It's possible Itachi was pretending to be scared since he was double agent.

I think it's just an inconsistency.

It would be inconvenient for his double agent disguise if he captured Naruto. When Jiraiya came along, Itachi seised his opportunity to avoid catching naruto and fled with kisame on the pretext that Jiraiya might Solo them.

I think the main reason why he was afraid to fight Jiraiya because he had already used tsukyomi on Kakashi and was afraid to re-use it so soon after fighting Kakashi, but when he was fighting Orochimaru his Mangekyo was newer so the danger of becoming blind was smaller

Well it's probably good to note that Orochimaru has both an eye obsession and an arrogance factor....Jiraiya probably wasn't dumb enough to directly look st Itachi's eyes.

Could be a couple of reasons.

1. Jiraiya imo is stronger than Orochimaru, yes I know many will argue but this is my personal opinion of J-man. Don't use their battle in part one, as Jiraiya was drugged and had less time to get used to the effects compared to Oro's loss of arms.

2. Jiraiya better suited a fight genjustsu, at least that's the consensus by some.

3. Itachi knew his abilities would not be able to bring out a win.

Or maybe Itachi didn't want to fight Jiraiya due to the former acting as a spy and helping konoha.

Jiraiya should not be taken lightly, he is a very very powerful shinobi.

Yup, he was a double agent and didn't want to capture Naruto, so he told Kisame that they will get solo'd. If they ever fought though Itachi would win especially considering he was healthy back then.

ot- he wasn't scared,he was always stronger than the legendary sannin,he just didn't wanted to blow up his disguish as of the double agent and told kisame that simple lie in his style.in reality he could have defeated him.
also oro never fought him all out either.anyways he would've been defeated by itachi even if he had gone all out,just like jiraya.

Obviously, all Sannins don't have the same power and logic.
Imo Jiraiya is stronger and has more knowledge of Itachi's weaknesses.
And Oro is just gay for Uchiha's Sharingan.

Remember, in naruto the A,B,C method of fighting doesn't work. So if itachi can beat oro, anf IF oro can beat jiraiya, that doesnt mean itachi can beat jiraiya.

So many people take Jiraiya lightly it's not even funny.

If Jiriaya had any knowledge of Pain's abilities; he would have won, as per what Nagato himself said.
Jiraiya's SM is superior to Naruto's; keep in mind that SM Naruto fought on par with Pain and beat the 3rd Raikage.

Also Itachi's genjutsu's are useless because of Ma and Pa. His speed and strength are superior and his intellect is equal to Itachi's.
All that plus his Toad summons, Rasengan, and battle experience put him just one step above Itachi IMO.
