Why was Haku's speed praised so heavily?

Cause it was the beginning of pt 1 and crystal ice mirrors looks like the most OP thing ever back then. Also, Haku was slowing up as the fight progressed. He could have easily killed Sasuke had he gone for the kill in the first place.
