Firearms are legal in the U.S. I can buy a rifle with the ability to disable police helicopters, even if they have light armors over their critical systems. Why are police helicopters not getting shot down? Because the people with the money to purchase and field that weapon enough to be proficient with it are generally content with life and see no reason to cause a problem with the cops or other people.

That's a $5,000 rifle out of the box. That's not including add-ons like a bipod, scope, etc (which can run you another $3,000 before you know what happened). The number of ranges where you could actually sight in the weapon, properly, are few and far between. Even worse - it's $5 per bullet.

Though what's really cool is that I can buy an M2 .50 caliber belt-fed semi-automatic rifle. If I'm a decent machinist, or want to contact one of my friends who is one - I can replace the steel back-plate and allow it to shoot full-auto (as it was designed... shooting semi-auto causes it to come into battery after each round, which is hard on the weapon). Those parts aren't serialized - so I could even grab them from DRMO if I know the right people.

Why isn't that a problem in this country? Because, as I said earlier, a link of 20 is going to run you $100 - 200 rounds (a relatively standard belt size) is going to run $1,000.

The type of people who could field that weapon are going to play in the white-collar crime segment, if they are out to be criminals.

The others are just avid collectors or survivalists with deep pockets who want to create their little fortress and be left alone.

There is a considerable amount of unreported crime. However, in the case of firearms - where injury requiring hospitalization and/or death is much higher, and the use of a firearm far more noticeable within communities... firearm crime statistics are exceptionally reliable.

As opposed to rape, theft, and other crimes where most victims never report to the authorities - and it's almost impossible for others in the community to report "we have stuff stolen at 13th and Medcaffe!" Not the case with firearms, where "shots fired!" tends to prompt an investigation and report - where police check local hospitals for gunshot victims.
