Mei has one big advantage of Gaara.

Water tends to make sand very difficult to use.

only oil can affect gaara's sand. water isnt thick enough to seep through. plus meis water has been shown touching gaaras sand and nothing happened

Mei has powerful attacks and I'm fairly sure that the Lava attack probably could destroy Gaara's sand. Of course, we still have yet to see Mei's entire arsenal (much like Minatos) so we don't know what she is fully capable of. But using the Hidden Mist jutsu would give her the area advantage.
