Michiru?s arm reached out of the warm haven of her covers. Goosepimples rising on her bare arm, she pressed down hard on her clock that was buzzing loudly. With a slight click, the insistent bleeping stopped.
5:00 AM. He told us to get up at 5:00AM.
Turning, she fell out of bed, her blanket still wrapped around her body like a cocoon. Rolling over to her drawers, she opened them, and after a slight struggle, finished dressing under the covers, which she then carefully replaced onto the bed.
Grabbing her bag full of Ninja gear, which she had packed the night before, she ran out of the house.
Of course, she skipped breakfast, as Kakashi had told her to.
...
They stood in a square. All of them had just arrived. Sakura was rubbing her eyes while Naruto was just yawning, letting his jaw slack open, revealing the pinkness of his tongue, and the whiteness of his teeth.
?Cover your mouth,? Michiru told him absently, not paying too much attention to their arrivals.
They stood there for hours. Naruto eventually sat down, yawning heavily, making sure to bring his hand to his mouth, while glancing at Michiru.
She smiled slightly.
The sun started to rise in the sky, suspended between the clouds. Sakura had sat down too, while Michiru and Sasuke just stood there. Michiru stood with her hands on her hips; Sasuke stood with his arms crossed.
Looking up, Michiru saw the sky was blue. The sun was heavy on her face, warm and comforting. Only a few clouds were slowly drifting through the sky. Michiru let herself float between them, reaching out and brushing her fingers through the mist?
...
The sun rose even higher. It was almost in the center of the sky.
?Good morning everyone. Ready for your first day?? Kakashi asked, appearing from seemingly nowhere.
"Hey, you're late," Sakura and Naruto said together.
Michiru said nothing. She had suspected as much. That was why she'd taken some lunch with her.
"Well, a black cat crossed my path so I had to take the long way," Kakashi said.
I should remember that one, Michiru thought, amused. She had started to like Kakashi. And she loved the way he spoke, letting the words slip from his mouth lazily, but not droning or sounding tired.
Naruto growled angrily.
"Well," Kakashi coughed, masking a slight chuckle. "Let's get started."
He walked over to a log and placed a clock down. Three stumps stood vertically, each a few feet from each other, standing in a straight line.
"Here we go. It's set for noon," He said, setting the alarm.
Then he lifted up three bells. They bounced against each other, tinkling lightly as they did so.
"Your assignment is very simple. You just have to take these bells from me. That's all there is to it."
He jingled them again. "If you can't get them by noon you go without lunch."
"Ah!" Naruto exclaimed.
"You'll be tied to those posts," Kakashi continued, "And you'll watch while I eat my lunch in front of you."
"So that's why," Sasuke mused.
He told us not to eat breakfast, to make it harder on us. Sakura thought.
Naruto just stood there with his head in his hands. Obviously, the prospect of going without one meal was impossible for him.
"But wait," Sakura said. "There's four of us. How come there's only three bells?"
"Well, that means at least one of you will end up tied to a post, and ultimately disqualified for failing to complete the mission. That one goes back to the academy," Kakashi said, rattling the bells.
"Then again, all four of you could flunk out too.
You can use any weapons including the shuriken. If you're not prepared to kill me, you won't be able to take the bells." He gathered them in his hand. They abruptly stopped sounding together.
"Those weapons are too dangerous, Sensei!" Sakura said.
"Hahahaha. Especially since you couldn't even dodge that eraser." Naruto laughed, remembering the previous day.
"Don't get too full of yourself," Michiru said. "He is a Jounin. An Elite Ninja."
"Class clowns are usually the weakest links. You can safely ignore them," Kakashi said. "The ones with the lowest scores. Losers."
Naruto growled, his laughing immediately cut off by the angry sound.
"When I say start you can begin," Kakashi said, turning to face them fully.
Naruto took out a kunai knife and started running towards him.
[ki]Too brash-headed, Naruto. Be more careful,[/i] Michiru thought.
Kakashi casually reached out and stopped Naruto's attack. He twisted the blade round so that it was at the base of Naruto's neck. It was faster than anything any of them had ever seen.
"Don't be in such a hurry. I didn't say start yet."
Sakura, Sasuke and Michiru all took a step back. Naruto was struggling with Kakashi; He had his hand in Naruto's hair. Then he released the Genin.
He's so fast, Sakura thought. I didn't even see it!
Just what I'd expect from a Jounin, Michiru thought, looking at Kakashi appraisingly.
So this is a Jounin, Sasuke thought.
"But you came at me with the full intention of destroying me so.. how can I say this... I'm actually
starting to like you guys."
Naruto was grinning as Kakashi said this.
"Get ready." Kakashi said. "And... start!"
All of the Genin jumped up and disappeared.
...
Iruka and the Lord Hokage sat at a table.
"Iruka. What did you wish to see me about? I don't think you came here merely to drink tea with me and chat, did you."
It wasn?t a question.
"Naruto's been assigned to Squad 7. The Jounin in charge of that group... Just how tough a trainer is he?"
"Kakashi, you mean. You are concerned about him."
"I am," Iruka said, placing his hands down on the table. "I heard a rumor about his training methods."
"Hmm," The Hokage said, and he sipped his tea. Then he pulled out a book with a blue cover.
"What's this?" Iruka questioned, looking up at the him.
"All the trainees who have ever been assigned to him," The old man said. "Those who passed and those who failed."
"May I?" Iruka said, reaching for it. He opened the book and read through it.
"Huh?" He said, surprised. Then he gasped.
