Imma stick to calling you Kevin regardless. :3

I know a few. One is full body surges of chakra, like Nagashi, and add weight, which will flush out the external chakra in a sense. I know of the Kai technique, and that a friend can wake you up as well. And you can inflict pain upon yourself (I don't understand the details of this, like how much pain is needed for what rank of gen). Oh, and I'm under the impression that sometimes you can simply ignore a genjutsu, like if the gen showed you a number of snakes approaching you, and you realize that the snakes aren't real due to your opponent previously summoning a goat, you can simply ignore the snakes and continue to attack your opponent, thus not wasting time on the fake snakes.
Wanted to address this, no this wouldn't work. Every time somebody deciphers whether they're in a genjutsu, they figure out the situation they're in isn't real therefore, by your logic, one could just ignore the illusion. However that's not how it works. Only time we've seen such a case was when Iruka used genjutsu on Sakura as a test to see if she were ready to take the chuunin exams. She walked right through and ignored the illusion. However there has never been a time elsewhere where that has happened.

When Itachi cast his genjutsu on Naruto during the arch where they were rescuing Gaara, Naruto understood he was in an illusion, however, he couldn't break out of it simply by knowing he was in one. He attempted to use Kai but it didn't work. The illusion used, though it's counted in the RP as one, was not a dojutsu technique, rather an ordinary genjutsu tech that Itachi had the ability to cast with merely his finger. Genjutsu hasn't been expanded upon much in the series. In the filler arch where it dated back to Naruto and Jiraiya's journey's between the origional series and Shippuden showed what happened when Naruto and Jiraiya were in an illusion. As well, with the Giant Clam of the Second Mizukage, everybody knew they were under an illusion but they couldn't simply break out of it by knowing.

The reason for this is because genjuts affects the chakra in the brain. It affects the five senses and one's perception. However, people can still use their brain to understand they are within an illusion but that doesn't do anything to deal with the chakra that is affecting the parts of the brain that control your senses like sight, touch, smell, etc, etc. You need to use one of the release methods to forcibly rid your body of the chakra that is infecting you and causing the genjutsu.

Well, I guess that momentary feeling that accompanies damaging your body also disturbs the flow of chakra. It's known one cannot maintain his string of thoughts when in pain, he cannot keep observing his surroundings. During severe pain, for a split second, you do not see, hear, smell or feel. I'm guessing this works whether your senses are unaltered or altered.

Using the pain method has pros and cons. Of course, this saves you a jutsu's spot by not using kai as it's a freeform move. However, this is only an advantage over using the Kai technique. If you're being attacked while caught in a gen, and you waste time inflecting damage upon yourself, you might not have enough time to react to the incoming attack.
Also, the more pain the more damage done to your body, the more damage done to your body the slower and weaker you become.

I guess I can conclude that pain, just like Kai, will stop techniques requiring a continuous flow of chakra such as sensory or fire streams.
The con you put is a result of using almost any means of release from genjutsu. If you take the time to hurt yourself or to even use Kai, you're wasting time to get rid of the chakra while your opponent follows through with their other attacks. Possibly, the only exception would be for the last method.

Also, lets not forget the degrees of pain you inflict based on the jutsu. The stronger a genjutsu is, the more pain you'll need to inflict. Stronger genjutsu affect the brain and your perception of your five senses evern more so than weaker so a stronger spike of the body is needed in order to re-establish your sense of reality from fiction. Where as; a D-ranked genjutsu technique can probably be released by biting your lip or a rather shallow cut with a kunai, an S-ranked genjutsu will require a significant wound which may end up hindering you in a fight.

The results, if your opponent delivers several high class gen techniques at you and you are only using pain as a method to release (for the sake of the example we'll say its the only way) then you'll have done a significant amount of damage to yourself to the point your mobility and ability to react are lowered.

Okay, in addition to what was said, let me just describe to you how I see Pain as a way to release from Genjutsu. When you're inside a genjutsu, you're inside a realm of illusion, and, especially when the genjutsu alters the majority of your senses, it gets harder to distinguish what's real and what's not. Although some genjutsus give the illusion of pain, actual physical pain is almost like an infusion of reality that snaps you out of the realm of illusion. It translates in a spike and even a loss of concentration, but it is mainly that abrupt sense of reality that pushes the genjutsu away. Of course, this is also why different levels of pain will only break different levels of genjutsu. The lowest would be clicking your finger (which is a pain you're used to) That would be able to counter, say, D ranks. Stepping um the game, weak physical attacks would break C, freestyle and low ranked taijutsu or bitting your inside cheek would break say B rank, strong taijutsu stabbing yourself, breaking smaller bones, low level burning/voltage would break A rank. EIG/Sage level taijutsu, breaking bones, deep stabs, high voltage/burning would break any other genjutsu. These are not set in stone, just some sort of reference table for you to follow.

Usually, the most used method is stabbing your thigh with a kunai. Should break anything up to A rank, deepen the cut, should break S ranks. You can do it yourself, or use a jutsu for the same effect (Normally I'd suggest that, since it could be handseal-less, and you might even use it to attack your opponent).

Along with pain, you can have a few other elements that would bring you to reality. A bucket filled with cold water would break up to A rank, or even S ranks if it comes with great contusion force. And even if if something is considered low ranked taijutsu, enough repetition could achieve greater ranks. A slap is around B rank ( a woman slap is A rank) in genjutsu breaking force, but if you repeatedly slap someone, it can break any genjutsu.

I think that's pretty much all there is to know about Pain releases. One thing though, many of these methods, even if insufficient to break a genjutsu, will be translated as physical reactions under the ilusion, which can be used as signs you're in a genjutsu (For example, if a fire jutsu is incoming, you might be able to sense the heat increasing but see no fireball, so you add two plus two and come to the conclusion you're in a genjutsu. Likewise, say someone slaps you. It is not enough to break you out, but, you feel the slap without explanation and it might be just enough for you to realize and use kai. (Because sometimes it's not about you being unable to use Kai, but just being unable to realize you're in a genjutsu).

Oh yes, I knew I couldn't ignore any genjutsu. But Perhaps some and maybe for a limited amount of time. Say someone uses that gen that simply makes you blind (Bringer of Darkness?). And you knew an attack was incoming. With little time to react, maybe I can say something between the lines of (Knowing his sense of sight was hindered, my character instantly began to expect an incoming attack, and when he heard the lightning jutsu/felt the ground shake/felt the heat he used said jutsu to send him back to safety.)?
Oh, and say I was in a genjutsu where sneaks approached me. If I knew the snakes weren't real because of my opponent summoning dogs in the battle. Could I simply ignore the snakes as the genjutsu doesn't change any other aspects?

In the first situation yeah, because you are not ignoring the genjutsu. You are using other senses that are not encompassed in the jutsu to block the techniques. And even if you can't see it inside the genjutsu, as long as you saw it before (say, right before the genjutsu started) you can still defend from it (Since Bringer of Darkness does not paralyze you). As for the snakes, then you can't. They have physical illusions, in a sense that, if they bite you or constrict you, you won't be able to move those limbs, despite thinking they might be a genjutsu. Though, in case of the snakes, since they're meant to constrict you, if you send a jutsu towards them, the jutsu will phase through them, which is a pretty good indicator they don't exist.

Okay, there are more ways to counter a genjutsu, but the final method we're going to discuss right now are full body surges. In essence, they work in a very similar way to Kai or even Pain. Basically, by forcing your whole chakra to burst outwards, you are, in an essence, bursting the genjutsu too. Basically, you are forcing a disruption within your own chakra system, and thus neutralizing the genjutsu. These require actual chakra bursts, not just any technique. Indisputable, is the release of the gates. Jutsus like Chidori Nagashi could work too. Jutsus like Earth Armor don't work, they encase you in earth, they do not burst you into earth. Jutsus that alter your whole body, like the Hidrification technique, also work. As per the old rules, these would work on jutsus one rank bellow them. So, Genjutsus for example, B rank, need an A rank burst. Though opening the gates is almost considered a Kai, so it allows to release in a direct proportion.

Okay. Other than that, some KG or skills block genjutsu inherently, for example, Sage Mode, where the Natural Chakra, entering the body, is able to protect from most genjutsus. Etc etc.

Any question?

Can summons use Kai? I was toying with the idea of creating a small sized summon that I keep on my shoulder during fights, and is trained to use kai on me if I show signs of being in a genjutsu. I'm unsure if something like that can be done.
Also, these jutsu that alter the whole body, I know the added weight and light weight doton jutsu are some of them. Is hiding in the rocks one? As it merges your body as a whole with rock. What about Water Replacement and Water Release Hidden Amongst Water?
Only questions I've got thus far. o-o

Yes to all of those, except Added Weight, Light Weight or even Earth Spear. Although others believe they count, I disagree. Since you're being taught by me, you can either abide or find me evidence that I'm wrong, otherwise, you will have to go by what I taught xD

Oh, I just thought they effected one's whole body. o-o I've recently rewatched Muu's fight with Onoki, Gaara and Naruto. In the end of the fight, Onoki used Added Weight on Muu in order to restrict his movements, making him too heavy to move at all. That made me think it must've effected all his body. o-o
Of course, even if I'm not convinced that it doesn't count, I try to avoid doing anything with a popular opinion against its validity. So I'm probably not going to use it, unless desperation makes a hypocrite out of me. xD

In this case, it's more like I'm against popular opinion xD. Anywho, now that we pretty much covered Recognizance and Counter, lest move on to Casting. How do you cast a Genjutsu, what's the purpose, etc etc

Well, I know that to catch someone in a genjutsu, you have to insert your chakra into his nerve system. I know some genjutsu get triggered by your opponent's senses, like that genjutsu the sound shinobi used on shikamaru and the genjutsu Jiraiya's toads used on pain. I know that sharingan genjutsu are triggered using eye contact. Some using smell. But I think chakra can still be sent directly towards your opponent's mind.
The purpose of casting a genjutsu? Well, genjutsu itself doesn't harm your opponent's body. At least I think it doesn't. But it can be used in battle in combination with physical attacks, as you can hide your actual location, or even restrict your opponent's movement. I guess Genjutsu can also be used for interrogation and stealing confidential information.

Firstly, it's not the nervous system, as per se, it's the actual brain. I can't give a lengthy description about how the text you wrote is quite incomplete or wrong, so you try figuring out for yourself for a while ;) So basically, re-write your answer, look in wikia, other trainings, battles, etc etc

Sorry about that. I meant the part of the brain that is responsible for translating the signals sent by sensory organs into images, smells, etc... Allowing the caster of the genjutsu to send modified signals instead of those sent by the nervous system. By doing this you can achieve partial control over your opponent. Of course, you can't control his reactions to whatever illusion you cast on him, but controlling what he can see, smell and hear can be very useful, and has many purposes.
You can hide your location, preventing your opponent from attacking you. You can delude him into thinking you're at a certain location when you're not, and you can use that to make him attack his ally. You can also use it to provoke a reaction, perhaps make your opponent see a a bolt of lightning heading towards him when in fact, it's a stream of fire that is about to hit him. If he used water against the lightning, it'd be god modding.

I'm really trying my best to figure out what I missed other than what you told me about, maybe the need of handseals? I searched, I asked, I squeezed my brains, it all didn't work. ;_;

Nah, it was good, I was just messing with you. Sorry about the long wait, btw.

Okay, so, a genjutsu is, in essence, the procedure of getting your chakra into your opponent's brain, through a Medium, and use that chakra to alter the flow of you opponent's chakra system, and produce an illusion. So, what happens is, whenever you get you chakra into your opponent's brain, you will create an influx, constant or not, of foreign chakra, which will, in my opinion and understanding, create a pressure on the brain, targeting specific areas which will produce the illusion you want. Which is why you need a good understanding of the brain (The better understanding the better the illusion, especially when exploring or creating genjutsu).

The most basic understanding is: You are able to perceive reality due to a great number of sensory organs spread out across your body (Nose, Mouth, Eyes, Skin, etc etc). These will catch stimuli from the world and turn them into "electrical" messages, transported by the Peripheral Nervous System into the Central Nervous System (Which includes the brain), where the messages are received and translated into information, which is then re-sent towards the rest of the body as a message to incite an action (or reaction). Gaining control of the brain means you can alter this pathway of information in multiple ways. You can either distort messages sent by the sensory organs (For example, removing sight, smell, certain visual structures, etc), you can add new messages (Create visions, add imaginary smells or sounds, etc etc) or you can even, in a more advanced casting, change up the information in order to incite a certain response from the target's organism (Like, for example, make him see threating images, which will increase the adrenalin production, create soothing images to calm your opponent, etc etc). You can't tell your opponent how to react to the illusion you create, you can tell them that they fall down because you made them see a spider, or tell them they're in paralyzing fear because you created a monster. Likewise, even by changing the adrenalin levels, you can't really control how much they change, everyone reacts differently, and, ultimately, it's up to the target to reveal what his character would feel in such a situation.
But you can guide them into whatever you would like to make them feel, or give out logical explanation of why they'd feel what you say. In fact, description is a very important thing, you can either use it to confuse the opponent, or direct their interpretation of the genjutsu into whatever is more profitable to you. And this is purely the psychological part of the genjutsu, which you can even do as you roleplay around, without needing to cast techniques (Something I like to call Freestyle Genjutsu).

Okay, back on topic, all these illusions/effects are produced by the addition of your foreign chakra into your opponent's chakra system, which pressures the brain in specific areas. You are basically substituting the target's sensory organs, and overruling them. This, though, adds unbalance into the system, making your opponent's chakra irregular, which, especially after a strong genjutsu or a lengthy genjutsu, makes it quite noticeable. Most obviously would be with chakra sensors, but you can even have symptoms such headaches or even internal bleeding (But that would require a very powerful and invasive genjutsu). A common misconception is that a chakra sensor is able to see the chakra travel from your body to the opponent, something that is incorrect in most of the cases. Ultimately, it is up to the Medium you use to cast the genjutsu, as in, what you use to get your chakra into your opponent's brain.

You already named a few, but I'd like you to go into more detail, as well as analyzing if you could tell they carry a genjutsu if you were a chakra sensor, or not.

So I'm probably not going to use it, unless desperation makes a hypocrite out of me. xD
The idea with the Added Weight and Light weight began I believe when Nirvana revamped the genjutsu release methods, or when somebody attempted to use these techiques and it was accepted by the moderators or sensei. It became that way because the user could essentially make their own body heavier or lighter with these techniques, and since that revolved around the channeling of chakra throughout the body, it was considerd a full body release method. However, if you think about it, you're not essentially releasing your chakra through these techniques. You're simply focusing the chakra inside your body to create these affects. Earth Spear, however, externalizes the chakra you use to create an affect outside the body.

I agree with Lili to the degree that these shouldn't be viable methods of release. For one, there is no real release of the chakra in those techniques, unlike Negashi or Lightning Strike armor. Both those techniques externalize the chakra outside the body and therefore is a full body release of chakra, however, Added Weight, Light Weight, are not viable release methods since they do not affect your body externally unless you apply it to another aspect, which, by then, is not full body release, you'd release it through anthor focal point.

Just a small little thing Liliana, what about the usage of Self Inflicted genjutsu? Do you want to explain that to him or you want me? It somewhat contradicts the idea of genjutsu being restricted to foreign chakra.

Hum, I agree. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it

Alright, as far as the self inflicted genjutsu goes, it's self explanitory. It's genjutsu where you inflict in upon yourself, meaning it's not foreign chakra that enters your body that causes a disruption in your chaka, rather, it's you manipulating your own chakra, putting it in place to disturb your own chakra (or an alternative view is preassuring the brain with chakra), to induce genjutsu.

This means that foreign chakra isn't necessarily needed in order to induce genjutsu, one can inflict one's self with their chakra and induce these affects. This brings up a whole mess of theories about what one can do with genjutsu now that foregn entities are not necessarily needed to act as a catalyst but we won't get into that here too much.

Did I cover everything Lili?

I'll be completely honest here. I have no idea what I'm talking about and I'm only guessing.

I think the medium that will carry my chakra is the same that carries the physical phenomenons to our senses for them to translate. If your genjutsu is triggered by sound, like the toad chant, then like the sound, your chakra will be carried by the air and will go through any objects not dense enough to stop it. I think smell also travels through the air, although small amounts of the mass causing the smell are what's traveling through the air, so maybe they're the medium. I guess genjutsu that is triggered by the sense of sight uses light as a medium, as the light reflecting on one's body is what the eye receives and turns into images. I don't recall seeing a genjutsu triggered by touch or taste, but I guess it's possible in theory but might not be the most practical method.

I guess a chakra sensor can't use his chakra sensing to sense if he's already in a genjutsu, since his chakra network would be disturbed. I'm not sure though. Also, I think if can sense gen chakra traveling to a target, it would only be in the cases where it travels through the air.

The only canon example of self inflicting gen I can think of is when Itachi accidentally freed himself from impure world resurrection. I'm not exactly sure how this would work, but I'm curious. Since we can channel chakra freely when under a gen and are able to perform jutsu, would putting yourself under a gen after being caught in a gen release you from said gen? Gennception, I know.

The senses are not the mediums in which genjutsu uses to affect the body. The mediums are anything that carries you're chakra to your opponent or, in the case of self inflicted genjutsu, your own manipulation of your chakra is the medium for the technique. So transporting your chakra through the direct receptors of the senses, like sight, hearing, olfacatory, touch, or taste could work but those aren't the mediums. The mediums are whatever carries the chakra and the intake of the chakra through those senses will be how the chakra enters your body. Usually genjutsu is cast through hand seals. Basically put, you make hand seals and your chakra enters your opponent's body that way through traveling in sed direction of your opponent. For alternative mediums, as you so pointed out, the jutsu would be carried through whatever (visual images for sight, the air/vibrations for sound, chemical transfers for smell and taste, and physical touch for touch). As for touch, there are no canon techniques that directly utilze touch however customs like Scorps' Lazy Fist utilize touch as a means to transfer chakra into the body.

Chakra sensors can tell when their chakra is disrupted through genjutsu. It is to be understood that a person can tell when their own chakra is flowing normally and flowing abnormally, so most genjutsu techniques can be distinguished by sensors should they look and notice their chakra disrupted unless, however, the genjutsu specifically deals with how one percieves/senses their chakra meaning they may be under genjutsu but the specifics of it are so they cannot tell they are under genjutsu, and there are some customs like that. However, in most normal circumstances, they are noticable. Only thing is, a chakra sensor isn't always scoping out their own chakra when in a battle. if their sensory is active, they usually say "i'm looking at my opponents chakra" or "I'm keeping track of everything outside me" they can't keep track of what's going on outside and inside them at the same time. That being said, if the jutsu is descrite enough, a sensor should have no legitimate reason to look inside himself to moniter if his chakra is normal. Any such action would be godmodding. They cannot see the chakra traveling towards them, that's not how the sensory ability works, at least not with genjutsu.

As for Self inflicting genjutsu, the concept is very custom based really. As genjutsu is defined as the manipulation of chakra to create illusions (in a very broad sense of the style), one should be able to manipulate their own chakra to creates such illusions. As it stands there are few canon technqiues if any (available to normal users) that are self inflicting, however it is possible to do within the RP in general, making its dwelling mainly within custom made techniques.
