[Theory] Jiraiya SELFLESS "sacrifice" was entirely pointless?

Allright, so we all know and love Ero-Sennin's last epic battle with Pein in Amegakure. It plays out very straight and serious : providing the dynamic action along with the suspense and tease of Pein's true identity. It came as a big surpise that Jiraiya was mortally injured shortly after his "defeat" against his "former student", but it was presented in a very fitting way, giving our loveable pervert a finale worthy of his greatness. Indeed, Jiraiya's noble, and rather tasteful "sacrifice" left a very lasting impression on his character and many people still consider it one of their top battles ever.

The funny thing is, though...

Quite frankly, it seems that his sacrifice,...was entirely pointless.

Here we see that our brave pervy sage refuses his only chance of escape as he wishes to risk his life in order to uncover the truth behind Pein. Seems pretty legit, right?
(and we know it to be a true SAFE way out, since the toad escaped safely with the course)

and so he uncovers that.....!

His true identity is.....!

hidden in this secret message?...Well...allright...what does it say?

Huh? That's really not what he meant by saying " I know his true identity" But at least, ...um..this would help Naruto in his final fight against Pein, right?

HE DOESN'T KNOW?! NARUTO HAD FIGURED OUT THE SECRET MESSAGE, WHY IN THE ****'S NAME HE IS SURPISED BY THAT FACT?! Oh and to top it all of, The Pein himself actually tells him that. Bo-bleeding-hoo.

He still gets pin-pointed to the ground and he still has zero idea about Pein's identity. Well, before he tells him all that obviously.

Now, what i'm trying to say here is that.....Jiraiya didn't really have to sacrifice himself in order to gather such trivial info that he knew all those ninjas before...because that didn't amount to anything in the end. A corpse and already gathered info was more than enough. Actually, when you think about it, Jiraiya could have warned Naruto that it was Ame orphans that were behind the death of Hanzo and go about much detail of their background. It actually could have been more of a help than "The real one isn't there"!

And yes, you could argue that Konoha sensors tried to locate Nagato near the village and succeded but it was Naruto who ultimately went there and finished the foo, cause he had found out his location all on his own earlier.

Without jiraiya's message and knowledge, naruto would've got a harder time defeating pain, and the village wouldn't be returned after the destruction
Jiraiya is a hero. Period.

I never really understood why it was such a heroic sacrifice.Even tho he had the chance to uncover pain's identity,he was in no condition to do that. There is no guarantee that konoha would be able to decipher his message. He risked his life virtually for nothing.I'd say that is absolutely foolish.Being a sannin, he should've realized how important his life was,for the village's safety.Konoha was lucky enough as naruto mastered the sage mode, otherwise it would be wiped off the map.

The death did inspire his training and progressing to sage mode not completely pointless

Yeah I get what you mean by this. Kinda had me miffed a bit whilst rewatching the fight a couple of weeks ago. But Jiraiya goes where he pleases ;)

Nice thread, always thought that myself. If he would have just went back, he could have help Naruto physically defeat Pain and warn the village what he's capable of.

I have to say I agree but you must remember that Jaraiya's death is ultimately a neccessity for the plot to progress and for Naruto to grow up. Good thread though, + rep.
