Unlike Itachi and Hiruzen, we've actually SEEN Hanzo in his prime. We know what he's capable of and we know that he is a highly profficient ninja. And during the second ninja war...he surely must have been the strongest ninja around? His poison is something which can barely ever be survived except for in special cases like Hidan and Reanimations, he defeated and titled the middle-aged Sannin, seemingly having no problem defeating them yet being impressed by their skills, defeated Mifune effortlessly, took down Akatsuki with his organisation and survived Nagato and the Gedo Mazu?!!??!

The guy is goddamn tricky and smart to get out of the Gedo Mazu attack alive and I can't think of anyone in his prime era who could defeat him. Especially with the summoning, his good fighting skills with his weapons (even in his old age) how difficult he is to get close to and how sly and manipulative he can be. He also fought with a sense of honour in his prime, letting Mifune, Tsunade, Jiraiya & Orochimaru survive after they had lost.

Hiruzen was old and had no counter for poison (also arguably could not top 3 sannin)
Hanzo in his prime still remains stronger than both Tsunade and Jiraiya (Orochimaru is debatable)
Kage of his time were his only threat, which I don't see likely as having a counter to his poison or his vast set of skills.

This guy was a machine. Shame he went senile with old age. If you can think of someone stronger in that time period seriously, let me know- im curious.

I think the three Sannins. But still, Hanzo is more powerful than them back then.

He was a beast then, fighting 3 Sannin. But, he still ran from Nagato. I would too, that Gedo Mazou is scary. o_O

True but he didn't know what Nagato was capable of and came unprepared. I doubt him and his men would've just stood around waiting for them to kill each other if they knew there was a rinnegan user down there.

Naruto's characters' powers don't scale as automatically as they would in - for instance - Dragon Ball Z. In Dragon Ball Z, if Vegeta's power is 18 000 and Freeezer has 530 000 there's just no way of putting it... Freezer > Vegeta, period.

Naruto doesn't work that way. Hanzo is certainly an immensely powerful shinobi, he held is own against the sannins and Pain, but there's no way of telling if he can beat or not the wide variety of arsenals the ninja world as to offer.

Orochimaru and Sasori are immune to poison, for instance. Here's one of Hanzo's major strenghts, nullified.

Poisoning or dismembering Hidan and Kakuzu would sort little effect unless he make them explode completely which then again would apply to every shinobi vs every shinobi.

I have an hard time seeing Hanzo catching Obito with just any means.

The list goes on.

This is not to say these ninjas could beat Hanzo fair and square, it's just meant to say that there's no guaranteed fights in Naruto.

Yeah for sure Hanzo couldn't defeat the Hidan/Kakazu combo or topple Obito, Sasori would be debatable but they weren't...really around in prime Hanzo's era. I mean, Kakazu was. But who knows how far in his power progression he was, he may not even have the hearts at that point. I honestly believe Hanzo was the strongest of his time but i'm not gonna be that guy who makes him out to be the strongest ninja ever :') He get's crushed by quite a lot of today's contenders.

Yeah, Deva Path got him when he was old and senile :')
I'm not an idiot though, I know that Nagato doesn't stand a chance against Nagato/Pain with actual experience and control over the rinnegan.

I still stand by this point entirely. He would've taken precautions if he knew he was dealing with an inexperienced rinnegan user, the fact that he managed to survive the Gedo Mazu in that situation is amazing in itself.

His feats are poor considering his hype, i don't think he lives up to it.

We just haven't heard many of them, there's very little we know about this time era of the Naruto world. If you can't think of a stronger, more capable ninja then Hanzo takes it.

I believe Hanzo lives up to his hype in his prime, but not as an old man and Edo Tensei.
Hanzo's poison isn't as deadly as you put it thou, since Chiyo can counter it and the greatest medical ninja Tsunade would be able to do the same.
I don't think prime Hanzo is stronger than prime Hiruzen but Hiruzen has no feats, they are similar aged.
I don't think prime Hanzo is stronger than Nagato but by the time of Yahiko's death Hanzo's already way past his prime so they aren't from the same time.
I think Hanzo vs 3rd Raikage is debatable, but I believe Hanzo is stronger than 3rd Raikage both in term of overall skill level and one on one match up.
3rd Raikage would be weak against poison and Hanzo is great at using it, the best strategy to take down 3rd Raikage is to hold him off with his great taijutsu(feats include taking down Mifune easily and dodging GM indicates he has great taijutsu and speed) while Ibuse breath poison at them until 3rd Raikage has the breathe, then he'd be paralyzed and Hanzo takes the fight.

The only slight competition might be Nagato but seriously, even in Hanzo's older age I think he could take it. Him and his unit could've definitely, Nagato was an inexperienced Rinnegan user that had never done anything like this before when summoning the gedo mazu and that took a lot of start up time. If Hanzo knew he was dealing with a rinnegan user then he would've have just stood around and waited- he would've taken Nagato out first before any giant statues or spirit dragons could be involved.

We don't know what Hiruzen was like in this time period, therefore he can't be included. Dude calm down, you can't make assumptions.

that fight with Hanzo and Nagato actually left Nagato more injuries than Hanzo.
I believe Hanzo has a better chance against Nagato than against 6 path of Pain, since his poison and taijutsu would be useless against Pain but very effective against Nagato.
had a typo before, Hanzo holds of 3rd Raikage until he has to breath*
