in the end if u think about both minato and itachi had slip ups on the way with there plans however the outcome atm has been what they wanted...

minato wanting naruto to grow up and learn how to control the foxes power so that one day he would be able to take on the masked man which naruto has learnt how to do

so imo both of minato and itachi's plans in some wierd way have worked out

How bout the first hokage being the biggest failure? He failed to kill madara, which was the cause for most of the entire stories problems/antagonists.
