Just... bear in mind that this is my first time teaching someone from scratch which isn't customs or anything, so go easy on me!
Alright, I guess we should start somewhere. My training will be a little different from the whole "here's the technique, now perform it" method since I personally struggle with that method and don't really expect you to be able to perform it. I'll teach with a more knowledgeable approach, trying to teach you everything there is about the techniques, how to use them to the best of your ability and so on. It will be more theoretical than anything.
With that in mind, let's start with the most simplest thing. Why is it you want to learn Puppetry? What is it that fascinates you about the art that you want to learn it?
Thats ok Sensei Alternative-dono!
I look forward to learning from you
*Bows*
Alright, well, I guess the main reason I wish to learn puppetry is that I can see it as a tactile advantage. While you can stay safely at a distance, your puppet can maneuver around the battlefield and surprise your opponent. A goo puppet master can make it seem like an opponent is fighting multiple opponents striking from different angles.
While using a puppet, you gain an extra reach, being able to strike from angles such as overhead, or behind or from the side that you might not have been able to before.
However one must always be wary to concentrate on surrounding, because there are moves that can catch you unaware if your focusing too hard!
My second reason is that its an artform, being able to configure and move dolls about a battlefield. Im really into strategy, and having a puppet, or puppets can be like directing troops or comrades. You must take care not to rush into battle, but wait for the moment to strike. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a successfully executed move because of your puppets, your friends and your tools.
But anyway, I love your answers. It's no doubt you can use them like an army, keeping them at bay with long range techniques which can be quite beneficial to you. The fact you're using dolls means you can strike from basically anywhere on the field at the same time using affirmated techniques. You just need to be careful against people who can fight using long range as well, though you'll have the outnumbering advantage with extra puppets.
But for now, let's talk about the fundamental rules of puppetry. Since it's a rather complex ability with so many different things you can use with it, there are a number of rules we as puppet users must follow. I'll also go over the rules for Sasori specifically as well which you will need to keep in mind.
1. No shadow clones. This is just because they can also control puppets which wouldn't be fair against other people. I don't quite get the rule myself, but it's there. Other clones (water clone, rock clone etc.) can be used since they're not capable of using the technique.
2. You're only allowed up to three puppets on the field at a time. This refers to the technique itself, so three techniques which contain puppets. Sasori's 100 puppet army counts as one puppet, so does Ten Puppet Collection of Chikamatsu and Sasori's Parents (though they can be summoned seperately).
3. You can only summon two puppets in a turn. Again this is done through the techniques, so Parents would count as one puppet if summoned together. I guess this is fair as you need to use the Puppetry technique in order to be able to use them, or they're just lifeless dolls.
As for Sasori specifically, you're not allowed to use the summoning technique. It's a bit of a burden, but you're not capable of drawing blood to use as a medium to summon, so that's the reasoning behind that. You could possibly use your core, but you'd die from doing that.
I think that's enough for specific rules. There's more here
You must be registered for see links
for your convenience. I'll probably reference that a lot. Any questions so far?
No, no questions for that.
I do have a question, which might be covered later but that all makes sense!
My question was, is there specific attack techniques for 100 puppets and mother and father? I tried to look I may have over looked then, but there didn't seem to be attacks.
If this is covered later please feel free to proceed :3
(Soen: Swin no Tai) - Puppet Performance: Two as One
Rank: C
Type: Offensive
Range: Short - Mid
Chakra cost: 15
Damage points: 30
Description: Chiyo will manipulate Mother and Father to attack the enemy with multiple attacks.
Note: Can only be used by Chiyo
But can only be used by Chiyo, so you're out of luck there. But no there's no techniques otherwise for the two collection of puppets. I'm guessing the reason is that the Hundred Puppet Performance aren't made to work together, but are more for overwhelming numbers and constant barrages towards them. That's where freeform puppetry comes into play and you can do some pretty creative stuff with it.
Now we'll move onto techniques.
(Kugutsu No Jutsu) - Puppetry Technique
Rank: D
Type: Attack/Defense/Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10(-4 each turn its used after wards)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes threads of chakra that are used to control puppets.
The most basic and fundamental of all the techniques, and probably the most important one. Tell me what you know about it, how you can use it and so on.
ok so for this technique from what I've seen and know, the user gathers chakra at the tip of their fingers. Then, shaping them into strings or wires, the can attach the strings to a body. Living or puppet.
The strings can be detached and reattatched at will.
you can have one finger for one puppet or have alp of your fingers for one pupPet. what differs would be control.
Good, but I don't think control really matters. We've seen Chiyo control puppets flawlessly with a single string attached, which says a lot about her skill, but you're right. Control will depend on how many strings you have attached to the puppet.
As for the other points you've made, you've hit the nail on the head. All it's really doing is creating small points of chakra onto a body of sorts, creating strings which come out of the fingertips, and then attaching them to a puppet. I guess you can call that a marionette style of puppetry we use, though it would be fun to see what other types we could come up with.
Yes you can attach them to a body, but you wouldn't be strong enough to have complete control over someone unless they gave up willingly to do it. We've seen this in the fight between Sakura, Chiyo and Sasori. Additionally, if you're strong enough you can control other people against their own will, but I would personally limit it to binding and so on. I believe it's stated in Sasori's abilities that he can do that.
But on top of all that, we've got more uses for them. The strings don't have to be attached to a body like you've stated. You can use them on weaponry like kunai to throw more than what your hands would be able to hold and with more speed. It's essentially up to what you can come up with in order to use it.
Nope nothing so far. Its a great point you made about tools though.
I know puppets are like ninja tools, but I'm thinking a lot about what we could do with other ninja tools as well like kunais and weapons.
its a great unique art.
It really is, it's so bad that it's underrated and all that jazz. Still, it leaves all the good customs for us cool kids.
I should have also mentioned this, but this technique is needed before you can use a puppet. So you summon a standard puppet, you post this technique along with it to make the puppet move. However you don't need to keep posting it unless you decice to completely retract the strings, as it will just use up chakra each turn.
So with that out of place, let's move onto the puppets themselves!
(Karasu) Crow
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: N/A
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: N/A
Description: Crow is the very first puppet we see in the series. It was created by Sasori, but is later used by Kankurou. Crow is a three eyed, four armed humanoid. Crow is one of the more basic puppets, but he is able to detach any of its body parts for deadly attacks, almost every joint having a blade at the end, allowing Crow to shoot his arms towards the opponent, and then have them return back to it. Even his head has a blade that can be extended out from the bottom of its neck when detached. This ability made it and Black Ant a very deadly combination. It also has the ability, like most puppets do, to release poison-tipped darts and smokescreens, which sometimes have poisonous gas mixed with them.
(Kuroari) Black Ant
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: N/A
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: N/A
Description: Black Ant, created by Sasori, is a puppet that is often used in conjunction with Crow and, later on, Salamander. It has a bucket-shaped face with two red horns and a total of six arms. It, like Crow, has three eyes. Its body resembles a very large barrel, and it is hollow on the inside, making its main use to be that of trapping, while weapons enter the many slots on its body. At any time, Black Ant can literally open its stomach, and trap an opponent, able to extend the two halves of its stomach so that it stretches out and over the opponent from a very fair distance (approximately mid range) and then retracts the stomach back to its original form, closing it with the opponent inside. Its arm segments contain hidden saw-blades. Like Crow, Black Ant can detach its arms for attacks.
(Sanshōuo) Salamander
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: N/A
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: N/A
Description: Salamander is a defensive puppet, though not on the level of defense as that of Hiruko. Salamander, as its name suggests, is built in the form of a large salamander, being one of the largest puppets seen thus far, and though it is not more powerful defensively than Hiruko, it is larger than the other puppet. Salamander is able to rise up a large area on its back to be used as a shield, making a black shield over its head. It, like some other puppets, is hollow, and it can open its back at any time and then rise up its large tail over its head, stretching it out and therefore allowing the puppet user to jump inside of it for protection. Salamander can also spew out fire equal to C rank. Salamander can only be destroyed by one who knows its weak spots, being a weak joint on its side that holds the shield in place and afterwards simply striking it on its back, or by a move of A rank or higher.
This is generally the basic army in every puppeteer's arsenal. Anyone's allowed to use these three, they're basic and made incredibly well to work together, so you can use that to your advantage. Now just out of whats in the descriptions, tell me what you know, describe what they look like, how they can be used in battle. The more detail the better, it's a very important part in freeform.
As much as I know, they are, respectively, an Offensive, Supplementary and defensive puppet combo. Crows offensive abilities are to keep the opponent on the move while oyu can set up Black Ant. Black Ant is to capture and hold the opponent while crow pushes them into it, being captured. Then to finish off by breaking apart and slotting in skewering the opponent.
Salamander is the defensive puppet, to protect the user from incoming projectile attacks. He wouldnt be so good against close combat as he is slow to move, being too big and wide to maneuver effectively.
Crow looks like a six four armed, with hidden blades humanoid.
Black Ant is a similar 4 armed humanoid, but with a wide barrel chest to capture and hold people.
While Salamander is a flat lizard like contraption, with a large metal iron plate along its back, which can be propped up to bloack attacks.
That's pretty much the jist of the trio of Kankuro's puppets. Crow's the offensive puppet, being able to attack with it's multiple limbs, Black Ant is the supplementary puppet, with the ability to cage someone inside of him and works exceptionally well with Crow, and Salamander is the defensive puppet, with a shield able to block techniques up to B-Rank. Just remember that because of Salamander's weight he can't "float" above the ground like Crow and Black Ant can.
Now we'll move onto something a little more fun: freeform puppetry. It works similar to Taijutsu, but you're now using puppets instead of your own body. Notice how the puppet techniques themselves have a ton of description on their structure, how they're designed and what they can utilize? Anything in the technique itself can be used as a freeform tactic! Of course if there's a technique for it the freeform would be weaker in comparison, but you can do it. (Just avoid the ones which say can only be used by Kankuro) For example, you can use Salamander's large tail in order to knock back an enemy, or use it to hit back something coming your way. If you don't want to get in trouble, you'd also need to explain as OOC (Out of character) that the move is freeform, and the options can be found in the puppet descriptions, such as Salamander's C-Rank flamethrower. It's happened to me before, but really they should be reading the descriptions of your techniques.
Now I would like for you to describe to me a basic freeform move using the three puppets on this dummy here *makes a random dummy appear*. Use anything that the puppets know by their description and try to make each one perform at least one action. Because this is freeform, description is completely necessary, so I don't want something tiny.
*I nod, as I attach chakra string to Salamander and Crow, as I lift crow into the air. I waddle salamander up to the dummy, and then, in one sharp movement, snap Salamander sideways, so his tail smashes into the dummy catching its underside. As the dummy is launched into the air, I nimbly flick my fingers, disassembling crow at the arms and legs, so they are now separated. Another flick of my wrist extrudes the blades, as I watch the dummy for timing. I then quickly clench my fist as it reaches the apex pinnicle, skewering the dummy with crows blades.*
That's very nice and well thought out, though I'd would have preferred you'd have thrown Black Ant into the mix somewhere. As the supplement to the trio, it's necessary for them all to work together. Don't forget you can use absolutely anything in their arsenal to achieve what you want. So you can use the fact that Black Ant opens up it's barrel like a door and have them close on the target, instead of trying to trap them in an attempt to smash their rib cage or something.
Try again, but this time try to use all three puppets instead of just two.
awwrr.... I dont like him though... Hes ugly haha.
But ok.
I again I waddle salamander up to the dummy, also maneuvering Black Ant in the middle and then, in one sharp movement, snap Salamander sideways, so his tail smashes into the dummy catching its underside. As the dummy is launched into the air, and falls back down, I place Black Ant under it catching him in the puppet, and quickly snap my fingers, closing and locking up Black Ant. Quickly after, I nimbly flick my fingers, disassembling crow at the arms and legs, so they are now separated. Another flick of my wrist extrudes the blades, as I watch the dummy for timing. I then quickly clench my fist as it reaches the apex pinnicle, skewering the dummy with crows blades.
That's a lot better, and still very similar to your old move. I noticed you replicating one of the jutsu from the list in your move, which isn't necessarily bad, just that in freeform I believe moves will be considered weaker if you're not posting a jutsu with them.
(Kairai Engeki - Kuro Higikiki Ippatsu) - Puppet Theater - Black Secret Technique Iron Maiden
Rank: B
Type: Attack
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 20
Damage Points: 40
Description: After the user has used the puppet technique they will call on two of there puppets. One will distract or lure the enemy into the other puppet which will grab the opponent and trap them inside of it.The puppet used to distract or lure then disassembles into poisoned knives that pierce the opponent via open slots in the puppet thats holding them.
NOTE: Only a puppet user with two puppets can use this jutsu.Must use puppet jutsu before hand for this jutsu to work
But really your combinations are endless if you can just put your mind to it. You can take anything you can think of and use it to your advantage. You should never just stick with what seems obvious. Take Black Ant here, in it's design it says it has two horns on top of it's head, making it an excellent puppet for ramming into people using it's heavier weight than Crow. Using that puppet alone, you can force them to sit on your target, immobilizing them and then attempting embowelment or tearing their arms off with his hidden saw blades.
Just know that the only people who will be able to effectively counter you in freeform are other puppeteers and people who have fought them before. Puppeteers already have the knowledge of how the puppet works so unless it's custom, they're going to know how they operate and can possibly read your attacks. People who have already fought a puppet user can use what they've seen, but that's it or it would be considered metagaming. This is why it's always a good idea to mix up your attacks.
I'm rambling, let's move on to something else.
(Chakra No Tate) - Chakra Shield
Rank: C
Type: Defensive
Range: N/A
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The puppets arm will pop out in four different directions in almost an umbrella-like manner. The arm segments will surround the puppets hand, and from those segments, chakra will emit, each one making one fourth of an entire circle, making a shield of pure chakra.
(Senbon Ame) - Endless Rain of Senbon
Rank: C
Type: Offensive
Range: Short-Long
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: 30
Description: The puppet will open its mouth wide, unleashing a torrent of senbon. All of the senbon are poison-tipped, meaning that a single hit by one could be deadly. These senbon can shower the opponent for as long as the user wishes.
(Doku Kemuri) -Poison Smokescreen
Rank: C
Type: Offensive
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The puppet will open its mouth and shoot out smoke balls that are imbued with poison as well. This can be used to obscure the enemy’s vision and to spread poisonous gas in the area at the same time.
These are the three most basic techniques every puppet has installed into them. You might want to remember these as they will be your most important assets to a puppeteer's arsenal. Tell me what you know about them and then I'll help you elaborate on your knowledge.

After a brief daydream, Sasori snaps back to the training, nodding as he understands the instructions.
Well the chakra shield is usually a common technique thats included in every puppet. It can be put onto arms or legs or even perhaps a chest, where 4 struts are ejected into an X pattern, and chakra is streamed into them, projecting a shield.
The senbon shower is a good pressuring move to keep the opponent moving as it can be channeled from large reserves within the puppet. Most times they are posion tipped, to add extra damage or effects and so a single senbon cut could turn the tide of battle.
The poison smokescreen is a great supplementary skill where a puppet can deploy a smoke screen. not only that but its poisonous as well. This prevents the opponent from coming in close for short range/taijutsu attacks.
