I know this sounds stupid but is it natural to be afraid of something or an issue that can't do any harm? I'm having a dilemma (long story) and I'm afraid to confront it. When I think about it there's nothing to be scared of but when I think about DOING it I just can't, it's hard to explain.

I think it's kind of my brother and dads fault because during my childhood they would make fun of me for being scared (playfully obviously) and I always tried to hide my fear.

How can I build up the nerve to confront the problem?

Make clay statues of the situation and sit with them and talk to them. Then make bigger statues and talk with them and act on the scenario. Do this for a few weeks, gradually making the statues bigger until they are life size. Then get really high and actually do the thing you are scared of. It's what I do and it works about half the time.
Also, try to imagine everyone naked. I had to make a really important speech one day and I was terrified, I would actually start shaking. So when I finally got up there on the big day that I had been terrified of for soooooo long, I took a breath and I imagined EVERYONE naked.....the judge, the jury, my lawyer, and I made my speech. It worked, and I'm a free man!!!!!!!

The real man isn't the one who ignores fear. If someone does that, then he's simply running from it and his problems. A real man has the strength to accept, face and overcome his fears.

Easy to say it, tell me you've never been afraid of just talking?

Imagining the situation is always worse, when you actually do it, it's never as bad. You can imagine all sorts of scenarios but when you actually do it, it's never the way you thought it would be.

To some people, not really. Nervous, but not afraid. Don't get these two feelings mixed up.

A bit more detail may be required if you want specific answers. What is causing the fear?

People worry about a lot of things, just because something doesn't cause harm doesn't mean you're wrong for worrying about it.
I suffer from social anxiety... I seriously have a, now mild, phobia of social situations. Do I think that going out and being around people will cause me harm? Nope. Does that stop me from stressing over it? Nope.

It's really hard to give advice without any further details. In my experience fear isn't a problem so long as it doesn't impede your life. As soon as you begin to avoid things because of your fear, then you need to address it. It pays to deal with things sooner rather than later, it took me about 4-5 years to do anything in my case and it eventually lead to depression.
