In some Japanese theme, 9 is the number that ends most things. The creator of DBZ wanted to end Dragonball Z in 9 seasons. Same with the creator of Seinfeld (as off topic as that is.) There will not be a new DBZ, but a new series if it hits a good success rate. GT sucked so bad.

GT will not be rebooted or continued. DBZ might. They left a cliff hanger at the ending of the movie to introduce a new series or set of movies and dropped hints that there will be more.

DBZ is cannon and GT is not according to Akira Toriama. He had his hand in GT but it is not cannon. The new movie was announced that it is also cannon. This is why GT would get dropped and DBZ would continue.

Additionally: MOVIE SPOILER There is a new transformation called "super saiyan god' and it is not "super saiyan 4" this is the biggest telling that GT was not cannon since they are disregarding super saiyan 4 ever existed. They also dropped hints that other characters may achieve "super saiyan god" in the future.
