Well truth be told I'd say Future Diary's manga is a good deal better than the anime. I really enjoyed the anime, but the manga has a lot more epic moments, particularly for the main character. Not to mention there isn't the problem of censorship, some cases of which were really stupid when I watched the anime ongoing. There's also the fact that the anime's ending was very lackluster and explained nothing at all, while the manga actually tells what took place.
That said, if you really don't like going for manga, the anime should be just fine. Ignoring anime/manga differences here, Future Diary is a fun psychological thriller with a bunch of action. If you're familiar with Deadman Wonderland, it's very similar to that, but with a Death Note-ish touch to it. A lot of awesome plot twists and Yuno is one of my all-time favorite characters in any anime. A lot of the side characters don't get quite as much development as I would've liked, but pretty much all of the really good characters get a good share regardless.
