NB has changed for the better.
New forum software, new layout and better tools to navigate the site.
Character limit is set to encourage meaningful posts instead of pointless/ spam posts. We have people who post messages like "IDK", which are nothing but waste of server space. We would be probably better off with 3000 mature posts than 30000 spam ones.
Forum news have been really helpful to get people attracted to creative sections of the site and other important activities at the forums. The largest fan base we have is Naruto but Naruto isn't the only thing we discuss. It's helpful if we have less spammed but still popular threads visible on home page. Such decisions are made on the basis of over all stats and those stats include the hits and responses of less active or less vocal users too. Spam threads on home page all don't sit well for the site and despite many warnings, members didn't care even if it were troll threads with negative/inappropriate content being sent on it.
Most of the users who are complaining about hot lists' absence are the ones who spammed in threads back and forth with similar posts again and again just to reach at the top. I have seen a user making more than 30 posts of the same one line sentence in a single thread to bump it up constantly and it was OP's alt. Anything for a hot thread.
Five spam threads on home page in the name of Hottest thread limits you terribly. Besides this option (The hot list) is still there- see the
quick link menu on top.
For the regular members of the base you have a lot better options to check out the interesting discussions.

There are also
today's topics, and
new posts options. These links are much more helpful in checking out the interesting discussions.
You must be registered for see links
You must be registered for see links
^ this though not sure if you can access these links directly or have to click on the option from top bars yourself.
It also shows you the hot threads highlighted with blue colour ( via today's topic other than quick links option) and with no replies in red. and you get much longer list with section details.
The quality of discussions depends on you guy guys yourself. Admins provide you a place to post your opinions and Moderators try to keep it neat and organised but creativity and analysis ability is not something we can teach you. The Naruto manga is at it's end but if people are still unable to review the series properly and go beyond the Versus threads or character bashing then it's their personal limit not something staff can do much about.
