Ghosts are either souls or spirits. Seeing as they're called Soul Reapers, imma say they're souls. Anywho, humans in Bleach's universe can't sense ghosts, spirits, souls, whatever (except for the few like Karin, Don Kanonji, etc.) Being able to sense them, say, like Karin, Don Kanonji, etc., doesn't mean they'd be able to fight with a Shinigami on level terms. I'd have to say the same goes for the OPverse. But, humans in Bleach also don't have King's Haki (debatable if that'd even affect Shinigamis).
