Hashirama's age mystery

When Hashi was told that 5th hokage was Tsunade, he gave out some emotions...
point is, he knew her, & she being his grand-daughter, he'd have certainly lived quite long....
Now we all know tobirama died protecting his comrades, at his peak-performance age, & hiruzen was appointed as the next hokage....where was Hashi at this time ?
he was definitely alive....
another question which comes in my mind, is why tobirama was appointed as 2nd hokage when hashi was still there ?
Its not as if Hashi went away for penance after madara incident!! he should've been more determined to stay in village as it was his dream to create the village...
Any Guesses ? or will I have to wait for this ever lasting flashback of manga chapters to end in order to know abt it ?

Hashi is Tsunade's Grandfather......& he taught her gambling, as well as knew that Minato & Hiruzen were once sealed together.....so Hashi seems to be alive for a long period after founding of village....
