So, in what battle did you suddenly find yourself lacking illusions to use?
Well, I would have to say I'd have found them handy when I was fighting Mathias and I'm in the middle of fighting McRazor which is proving to be really difficult with just the basic five. So even having genjutsu so I can build better moves for my counters would help me out a lot.

I haven't had so many battles, so I haven't found myself lacking illusions. But, i have thought about any future fights that I may have and I might need it. I also would like to learn about genjutsu so that I may counter it effectively. I also have CFS's planned with genjutsu in it XD

Alright. Alrighty.
Many people would say that the stonger the illusion; the better. Looking at these D-ranked techniques and the methods with which you release Genjutsu, can you think of any reason why that's wrong?

1) ( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if you use it double)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.

2) ( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

3) ( Genjutsu: Kasumi ) - Illusion Technique: Servant
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: 20
Description: The user does one handseal and throws a paper bomb at the enemy. The enemy, trapped in a genjutsu will see a clone of the user advancing upon him. As the paper bomb reaches the enemy, it explodes

4) ( Kasumi Jūsha no Jutsu ) - Mist Servant Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost:10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: This illusion creates numerous illusionary clones of the user that appear to emerge from the ground, trees, rocks, etc. If these clones are attacked, they appear to multiply. The user can co-ordinate his attacks with the clones to make it appear as if they are real.

5) ( Magen: Narakumi ) - Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user performs two handseals causing it to appear as if a swirl of leaves surrounds the opponent. The swirl eventually falls away, and after a few seconds, the opponent sees the image of whatever they fear the most, shocking them and potentially causing them to faint.

It's wrong because from what I've seen the higher the rank of the genjutsu means it's more obvious to the opponent that they're in a genjutsu. Therefore allowing them to get out of it quicker. These genjutsu to me are subtle and it will give your opponent are harder time to work out he's in a genjutsu. For example, the false surroundings technique requires no handseals, you just release your chakra and send it into the enemy's chakra system and you're free to manipulate the surroundings any way you want and mess with his perceptions. You could make it seem as if you use an earth jutsu which would lead them to potentially use a pointless lightning technique. It's easier to slip up in your explanation with these lower rank genjutsu. Another example would be the Servant technique and even the Mist Servant technique, although you'd have to make it seem like they're real clones straight away by perhaps doing a combo taijutsu attack or else when they get attacked and multiply it won't be believable. To sum up, in my opinion, the higher the rank the more obvious it is.

I don't know much, but I'll take a guess.
It may be wrong because these genjutsu are quite simple by what affect they give, most of these don't change much of what the opponent already sees, so it may be harder for the opponent to tell if there is actually a genjutsu cast upon them, thus being able to attack them without them getting free so quickly.
That's all I can think of :/

Oh and I has a question, can more than one person be trapped in a Genjutsu? xd

It doesn't automatically come with rank, but the canon, high-ranked illusions are indeed very obvious.
When using illusions; you're using distractions. An illusion alone won't win you the battle, but it can take you a long way. You could, for example, create a situation where your illusion is so realistic that your opponent grossly metagames to escape it; thereby losing the battle.
Any faovirte amongst these D-ranked ones? You don't need to have one yet; we've got plenty illusions left ;)

The 'Nirvana Temple' illusion used by Kabuto under the Chuunin exam caught more than one person in it, so the simple answer is yes, but most canon illusions aren't made for it and, thus, can't be used on more than one person.
And you're right. Look at my explanation above for further details.

Now, you two; pick a technique and tell me about its limitations. These are just D-ranked techniques; they aren't made to be the best of the best. Most of them can give you an opening, yes, but they are mainly just distractions.
So tell me where the line goes for these. When do you need stronger illusions?

( Nehan Shōja no Jutsu ) - Temple of Nirvana Technique
Rank: A
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 30
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes one handseal, placing all the targets in the area under an illusion where feathers appear to fall from the sky. This slowly puts the opponents to sleep after one turn.

I like this technique, the fact that it only needs one handseal and all it does is summons feathers. Yes the user may think it's a genjutsu straight away, but they need to break out of it; by doing a lot of damage to them self because of the rank of the technique. I also like the fact that it puts the opponent it sleep if they cannot/ don't realize it's a genjutsu, giving you -really- the auto win.
The stronger the technique maybe needed for those who are also strong in genjutsu or are very powerful without, so putting them in a trance would screw up their move, plus they would need to damage themselves quite a bit before continuing. This would quickly change the tide of the battle.

Out of the D-Rank I'd have to say the False surroundings is my favorite so far.

(Kokuangyo no Jutsu) - Bringer-of-Darkness Technique
Rank: A
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 30
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes one handseal, causing the opponent to believe they have been trapped in a world of infinite darkness, where their sense of sight is useless. It is capable of affecting multiple targets within range. However, it does not negate their other senses.

I know I'm picking one that's used quite a bit (at the start of battles). I am interested in this one because it all depends when and how you use it, you could be so crafty and sneaky with this jutsu. Like if you're in a close range taijutsu fight, you could flick dirt toward the opponent's face then as they're dazed by this perform the handseal and it would blind them. They'd however think it's the dirt and it actually being a genjutsu would be the last thing on their mind. I love the way it isn't exactly a 'powerful' genjutsu on its own but it's the way the user uses it that makes it powerful.

Aha. What if your opponent simply uses Kai? Or has a clone ready to inject chakra into him? Or uses an S-ranked full-body technique? Damage isn't a necessity for breaking out of illusions.
Can any of the D-ranked illusions create the same advantage and/or imitate the effect of your A-ranked illusion?

Not a bad strategy, but, like you said, it does require handseals.
Same question to you; any D-ranked illusion that could imitate this effect, or achieve something like it?

The flower petal escape rains down petals instead of feathers, but the opponent doesn't fall asleep it's only a distraction. This technique could be used as both a distraction and to make the opponent fall asleep.

(Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape

This one doesn't actually 'blind' the opponent it just blocks his field of vision but in reality I guess it would have the same effect as him being blind because he won't be able to see but it still isn't exactly the same. Only, there are two drawbacks to this jutsu that bringer of darkness doesn't have. The five handseals and the obviousness of the sakura petals.

Always remember to check how many handseals your illusions require. Availability is an important factor in deciding which illusion to use ^^ (General note)

The both of you seem to have thought this through.
We're nearing the end of D-ranked Genjutsu. Any questions so far?

When you're ranking a custom genjutsu how does one measure the rank of a genjutsu? Power? Obviousness? How big of a distraction?

Read for yourself.

( Genjutsu: Kai ) - Illusion Technique: Release
Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion.

The rank of a Genjutsu measures the chakra output you need to supply to make it work; so I'd say it's a general measurement of its power-level :)p)
And generally you create the technique before you rank it, or aim for a rank and read the description. You'll quickly get a feeling for it: the most powerful illusions are high-ranked, while the most simple and generic ones are low-ranked.

That's it; consider yourselves practitioners of D-ranked Genjutsu.
