Why couldn't the Third just announce Itachi as the fourth hokage?

My bad, 4th hokage wouldn't have been possible at that time - 5th hokage, on the other hand would have been totally fine. Gaara was what, 14 when he was named Kazekage? Unless the sand went without a Kazekage for 2 years, then it would be 16. The Third said himself that even as a child Itachi thought like a Kage - he could have been that clan's redemption, instead of their demise. If an Uchiha was kage, the Uchiha would be foolish to keep thinking they were being oppressed. At the same time, Itachi would have made a great Hokage. Win/win. Itachi wouldn't have let the Uchiha continue with the coup, which, even if it by some miracle still existed, would be torn by the naming of Itachi as Hokage.

Itachi could have been the 5th Hokage. Smart, powerful, and peace as his main priority. The elders should have named him the next Hokage. Then Itachi could have said, "Yo Pops. Chill. No need for a coup d'état. I'm going to be the next Hokage".

Yeah he probably should have been the 5th hokage. I dont think hes too young, considering he basically was kage level when he dumped on his whole clan at age 13. And considering the 3rd said that Itachi had reasoning similiar to the hokages at the age of 7, he was probably smarter than Tsunade at age 13. Having an Uchiha as the hokage is more than they wanted.

Wrong, you obviously don't read the manga closely enough, The reason for the coup was for equality if Itachi were to become the 5th hokage and the clan was still around they would have got that. Who would challenge Itachi with shisui as his right hand man, no one.

I do not remember a single scan of Obito murdering the rest of the clan, only Itachi and Obito stating such. Therefore, I am under the assumption, both killed members of the Uchiha.

As much as I like Itachi and believe he would have made a decent Hokage, having an Uchiha in charge of Konoha... would kind of go against the whole massacring their clan because they're dangerous. Also, Itachi himself would have refused most likely.
